Have a couple of sodium lamps but ones given up,was going to get another sodium but is metal halide a better light?

Main one will be 35' up facing out over a 150' silage clamp, will one 400w be enough (most work will be underneath the light)?

The Sodium light we have is pretty poor but fine for walking around the old yard. I have 2 metal halides where the new buildings are one 80w (security) and a 400w at the grain store yard 24mx24m at 25ft and gives a great light over the yard and beyond 150 ft might be a stretch but it will be miles better than Sodium . IMO Metal Halide is a massive improvement on Sodium.

Got a new bulb for my sodium light and its the daylight sensor at fault.

Found some metal halide floods on a website, tried to buy a couple of 400watt but the site security cert had expired so didn't bother.(n)

Sodium - OK
Halide - much better colour of light
LED - got a couple of security lights, great thing is the "instant light" - no warm up. Going to try some more powerful LED's in a shed for this winter - sometimes you can have the job done before the sodium lights warm up.

Sodium for illumination, MH for working under.

Main yard sodium has died again (n) so I'm going to get a metal halide to replace it.

I bought a 100w led (was claimed to be the same as 1000w halogen) I'd say its the same as a 300w halogen.(n) it would be alright if they were £20 but it was £125.:(

You have to go way up the watts to get the equivalent of a 400 watt sodium or MH in led format
I am just replacing 30, 400 watt sodium and MH high bay lights with 135w LED's they are expensive but if they are used a lot there are some big savings to be made in changing over to led , the 10 or20 watt leds even 30w LED's are not really any comparison for even a 150 w halogen let alone a 400 w son or HM but they do have there place but in essence a big wattage led is going to cost considerably more than a son or MH light in the short term , but will repay the cost eventually.
