Methanol

Water injection has been around for years, and in tractors too! International 10 20, 1920s, or thereabouts had it.
Methanol does help petrol engines cope with water in the fuel, here the problem is the water blocking main jets and filters, methanol prevents this. Beware, should any of those drums catch fire, the flame will not be visible!

A grass track side car outfit that a neighbour ran, used methanol. Engine was a supercharged 650 triumph with an XJ6 carb upstream of the blower, this had had the main jet opened out to .125", and had no needle! The engine was still borderline for mixture! Went well though!

Back in the 50s, when I was a student, I hitch hiked everywhere and met some interesting people. One old boy introduced himself as an inventor and explained that he had a water injection apparatus on his car to improve performance and save on fuel. He explained that petol engines work better when the weather is misty. I have no idea if that's correct, but he stopped the car, lifted the bonnet, and showed me a gadget attached to the air intake. Just an aside that I found interesting. I would think any invention that saves fuel would be opposed by those who sell it and tax it!

Water raises the knock tolerance which means you can run higher compression and since higher compression theoretically always leads to a more efficient engine i am quite certain he's right.
If it's worth the effort is another matter of course...

A fitter at the quarry told me a mate of his tried to sell his idea of an engine which worked on a putting water on a chip pan fire effect which we know is quiet explosive.Obviously the idea never took off but interesting .I don't know how true this tale is though
