MF 6465 power upgrade

My friends just bought a 2008 6465 with 3500hrs on the clock. He's looking to have it turned up to around 150hp. Whats the best way? Chip or Dervdoctor?

Main jobs are pulling a F5500 baler, 2500gal tanker, 5 furrow plough and grassland subsoiler. Have been spoiled with the previous tractor (MF8220 that was well turned up) and need a bit more on the baler especially on the hills

When we bought one a couple of months back the dealer told us chip express do a chip to take it to 150hp for about £330 + VAT. Had ours on the baler last night and I think she’ll be getting done unless a better solution is suggested on this threads as she’s got nowhere near the poke of the 6290 she replaced

Just remember the rear axle trumpets are a lot lighter on the 6465, than a 6475, or 6480, the 6480 has bigger front axle hubs / final drives, than the 65 and 75. Who knows how much penny pinching they have done with the internals of the lesser hp models?

It's not 'penny pinching' exactly. They are built commensurate with their power output and initial selling price. The penny pinching comes more at the consumer end where people buy lower priced and power products than they need, and is suitable for their implements, and 'chip' them. THAT is where I reckon there's penny pinching.

Agree with you @Cowabunga , what I should have said. Some times although being built on the same visually sized transaxle. The lesser powered versions can have internal differences such as a lesser number of plates in clutch packs etc. So yes if we owners boost the power of these tractors, we are guilty of penny pinching and do it at our own peril.

You can’t really go from a 166hp (tweaked to even more you said?) to 120hp and expect not to be disappointed with its performance [emoji848]

Not said we're disappointed with the performance for what the tractor is, he knew what he was buying was less power than what he had. Its what was decent and available at the time for the right money in the budget. He has been advised by a trusted, time served Massey mechanic on what is available for this. Although he said to chip it, I'd prefer that he had it remapped as I'm not a fan of just bunging a chip on, see too many with problems after as it only boosts the fuel and not adjusts anything else.

Was just looking for opinions off people on here who may have used both or either.

We ran a 5465 (same tractor just more basic) and from new it had a TunIT box fitted by the dealer, even their demo had it before we bought one.

Tractor ran great for 6 years and 3000 hours when we traded it in.

My biggest annoyance with it was it was a bit numb for its power. Hell of a lentth and not much steering lock either.

2500 gallon tanker on a 6465 in derbyshire good luck !!!!!!! dont do it the tractor is designed for the hp it has dont you think mf would just chip it instead of making a different bigger tractor at more cost to them unlees they had to ?

Steering lock is adjustable to 55 degrees like any other tractor these days, large and small. It is a six cylinder tractor as far as length goes and probably no longer than average.

Think the lock is great, when mowing have been able to turn very tightly

We're not 'Up in the hills' as such but do have some nice ones. No real issues here have had it on my 7840, and his 6180, just need to think about what you're doing and don't try daft turns.

I had mine done by the derv doctor. Not because I want to put a 4m sumo behind it or similar but because I was disappointed with how it coped on the road with even a light load. It pulls well now but does smoke a fair bit when pulling away.

With regards to turning circle it seems excellent to me, certainly turns far tighter than my 6270

What sort of cost was it? PM if you wish

Thanks

Not sure what the issue was with ours then, it had 480’s and 600 tyres.

Our current T7.210 is a much more nimble tractor.

The issue was probably a combination of not having swivel mudguards, a relatively narrow track width and, possibly, a whole lot of people who couldn't be bothered to adjust it optimally.
