Talk about “lead a horse to water”!
If you can’t be bothered to read all of the speech, you shouldn’t comment on it.

When I first read it, I was certain that at least something within it would annoy me. But to my utter surprise, it didn’t.

Read it all. Seriously, It’ll probably be the best 10 minutes you’ve spent in a long time!

the EU are putting direct payments to farmers at the heart of their new policy that is what we are competing with hopefully scotland decide to do the same
If your that insistent that you need subsidy to farm, then move to Europe. Otherwise your just going to accept that the UK gov are not going to pay you to play farm for very much longer. They don't care enough about food security above the other problems they face. Change is coming boss whether you like it or not.

perhaps the non/late payment of our countryside stewardship payments are for our own good...to get us used to not having anything. Still not been paid for one started 1st jan 2017. What a shambles, Gove needs to sort out his own inefficiencies before having a go at ours!

As Gove quite clearly explains in his speech, he is getting the house in order payment date wise.
This is shown under the Reform begins at home section. It couldn't be more clearly stated!

Your 1st payment for a Stewardship scheme that started 1/1/17 is only just due for its 1st payment as from 2/1/18 (i.e. from now). Some have started getting theirs already.

When? In about 20years I recon. And I'll be passed caring when it happens. It will happen slowly too so you won't notice it changing till you stop and reminisce what life was like when you were younger.

I just wish some/someone would stop playing the same old record. Sub's aren't going for a good few years yet so let's keep farming whilst their about and stop moaning that the competition are subsidised for production and were not. (New Zealand excluded obviously as we don't compete with them;))

According to their guidance, and also a workshop of theirs I attended, a first payment on account to be made by December in year of scheme and the balance by the end of June the following year. Well I wouldn't mind if we didn't get quite so paranoid about meeting the deadlines they set us...

heard it all before and will believe it when I see it
but
and its a big but subs as they are paid now don't stop anyone from farming without them, just put the sub money some place else and see how you get on
not sure all this talk of falling land rent prices that some are banking on will happen if they start paying out well for environmental schemes as land owners will just put the land to that and sit back

Land rents falling will only happen if there is complete removal of sub's which there won't be now. Remember last week there was every chance that a big drop in sub's could happen. Now gove has spoken farmers can carry on as they are for another 6 years until its likely to change again in 2024

Depends if the environmental schemes require grazing in some form. Could be opportunities then.

anyone who watched the Ministers speech to the OFC might like to watch President Trumps address Monday to the American Farm Bureau.

Think that link will take you to a You Tube vid.

Well worth a watch as it is classic Trump. Showman par excellence. More different from Mr Gove you could not get.

Below is a snip from a financial paper, on the unlikely scenario of Gove / Moonbat holding hands: it was outlined several times in Gove's speech to the OFC as 'public responsibility for the public purse' where he said:.

"I want to develop a new method of providing financial support for farmers which moves away from subsidies for inefficiency to public money for public goods..."

"But there is one part of Gove’s potential reforms (I say potential as there is an awful lot of consultation to come) that hasn’t yet had quite the attention it should have: he also mentioned that part of the price of continuing to rake in public cash would probably have to do with public access to land.

In England and Wales the public has a limited “right to roam”: you can go where you like on what is known as “public access land” and much of the coast is free access, but a lot of land still remains firmly private – you can only cross it if there is a public footpath or bridleway. Things are different in Scotland, where everyone has access to all land and inland waterways as long as they behave responsibly (this means you can camp, cycle, canoe etc); we don’t have “no trespassing” signs up here.

What if the price of keeping a subsidy system is UK-wide right to roam? I can’t see big landowners being particularly keen on the idea. But then again, I can’t see taxpayers being particularly keen on continuing to pay their bills without some very obvious payback."

If that happens..... Right to roam and free access to land..... I shall give up my subsidy and plough plough plough every inch of the farm and farm.
The ONLY way the Govt can control you is by dangling the subsidy money....... Not enough subsidy= no control. They know that.

Although I could be tempted to allow free access where it suited me..... Such as the bits around the posh houses...I farm on the urban fringe on some outlying land....the feckers think its an extension of their garden anyway....so might as well get paid for it.....lol.
And plant a lovely environmental mix for them to walk amongst...... Maize/OSR/thistles/beans etc etc

If you have 1000 acre +. And have 5% in EFA...... That's 50 +acres out of production........ Not to mention the extra margins and skylark plots and three crop rule. Blah blah.
So a large arable farmer will need a sizeable environmental payment to continue to follow these environmental rules

Although the Devil will be in the detail.....and once we have some detail then we can start to think up ways of turning it to our advantage...
