hi
I'm currently looking into a farm tenency in leistershire and I'm just wondering if anyone on here knows if there are any local dairy companies to approach to try and gain a milk contract.
Thank you

Already tried muller as they already take the existing milk. They said no but can go on list. There's been 5 county council dairy farms up to tender this year can't go for them if no outlet for milk. Unless I'm going wrong way about it!

don t know of any one recruiting at the moment in the area . this is one circumstance where the coops ought to do something about I presume you are a new entrant like I was and I had difficulty in getting the first contract , everybody thought it would be easy at the time but I only had 1 offer out of 7 buyers passing the gate, this was many years ago now. it would be nice to think that the big coops would allow new genuine new entrants in and it is something I would back strongly but only for genuine cases.

Fairfields? Won't be best price though! How about asking council about stocking with young stock and working off farm to start with? Cheap stock available now and hopefully get a contract in next year or two?

I will get in contact with some of these companies and see what response we get. I agree there should be some way of trying to encourage new dairy entrants but on the other hand these companies are driving existing out. No easy road.

Is the holding "all ready to go" or does it need any work doing to get it up to scratch ?
I sometimes wish I had made a slower start and sorted a few things out "properly" before I brought the cows in. Could be an opportunity ? Buy some cheap youngstock in the meantime.
Council will understand the current situation with difficulty getting a contract.

No it is all pretty sound. I'd tendered for it 2 years ago but was ultimately out done on a conservative bid by myself. Could of got a contract then at 29p. Now look. The man who got it has done ok as he is already moving off to a bigger unit. Which maybe bad as the council might be expecting same rate of rent if that lad done ok.

Muller - huge waiting list
Freshways - not taking on. If need more litres they are giving their producers option to increase A. Fair play
Arla & FM -?
Meadow - again, not taking on. Possibility of a market related temp contract. You'd be looking at 13p

Have you thought of organic conversion?

It is something I'd thought about and looked in to. But with only 80 acres of land and 2 years to convert didn't think it would stack up in the short term. If they offered 25 year leases might of been a option.

Have you thought of contract heifer rearing till a better contract comes available? Or is the landlord demanding you milk?

It is a possibility as long as you present a plan that works n your lucky enough to get the farm. As I'd be moving in to the area I don't have the contact to try put that in to place. They are charging nearly £13000 for fixed equipment like the parlour. Which if u wasn't interested in milking at all you don't have to pay this n they would remove it.
