Mineral Best Before Date

Hi all, looking for your views on this. I have a few bags of ewe minerals from last years lambing that have a before date of July 2017, 6 months after manufacture. Am I short changing the ewes feeding these minerals? Do they degrade that quickly?

Reckon they will be much the same so long as stored dry, cool and out of direct sunlight.

Fairly sure a few mineral suppliers just slap a new label on the out of date bags anyway

They’ve been stored in a shed and are still in their airtight bags, look and smell as good as they did last year.

Minerals should be fine - after all most of them are just ground up rocks that are millions of years old in the first place.
Vitamins may deteriorate a bit though.

Same here, Mum and Dad would be pleased at least their good sense rubbed of on both of us (really glad our sisters aren't on here )

They put best before dates on water, JFDI, don't buy into their sales technique like they want you to.

A big water bottler is a customer of mine for his dairy feed, anything over 3months old has to be poured away, bottles melted and made again and re filled. This is all “security” incase there’s a water shortage.

Vitamins will have degraded (slightly) but won't cause any harm. I'd have no qualms in feeding them.

I would agree with TT the only raw material with a best before date would be the vitamins, and they usually come with a 2 year date on them. So after the 6 or 12 months date on the bag they will degrade but potentially over another 12 months. Feeding free access could be a problem as some times the flavouring "goes off" and it makes it less palatable to the stock.
