Mobile phone masts

Anyone here know much about mobile masts? I have looked on tinternet, but it only gives general sort of information. EE have told me that they have turned off the bit (node/flange/sticky out bit) that shoves a signal my way, but left the rest of the mast working.

Is this possible?
Why would they do this?

Thanks!

Sounds odd that they'd do something to reduce coverage on a permanent basis. Two masts here and they're constantly updating things to boost signal..

I suppose that anything is possible and they can and do reconfigure and change their networks all the time.

The carriers have made lots of changes to their masts as they have moved over to 4G (mostly upgrades to the "backhaul" or data connection to handle larger data needs of 4G) and slicing and dicing and reallocating their given spectrum (frequencies) from the older 2G (less profitable, less used) etc to 4G

EE are fairly unique in that they have access (mainly due to their history from Orange and t-mobile) to 1800MHz, 2600 MHz and 800 MHz frequencies to run their 4G (and future networks over). They have and will begin to use 4G to carry voice (voice over LTE) as it means they can squeeze more out of their spectrum.

The change to one of your local masts is probably part of a wider series of changes in the area to accommodate one or more of the things above but only EE will be privy to this and quite unlikely they will release info as to exactly what they are doing and why.
