Molasses pump

we are going to start feeding molasses. An on ground tank would be best for the location we have but the the molasses would need a pump. The question is what sort of pump do I use. It's is 1.3 kg/l so fairly thick, do I need something more substantial than an ordinary water pump?

Thanks for the help

Liquid fertiliser is 1.33 too so if you want 250litres/minute a Honda water pump (the plastic ones are rust free) could be your answer. If you only want 40-50litre a day out then a hand oil pump like you get in 40gal drums would be the boy

This is a Banjo one.
A Honda engine with trash pump will do it if you ever need to move water/ponds at any other times of the year but far more costly!

A good couple of hundred litres a day. Have to have a method of getting it in the feeder. Not sure about the fret pump it is more sticky than liquid fert.

I we t to an open day on a dairy farm and they had a purpose built plastic pto pump for pumping mollases. The idea was at the time to mix it in with the silage at clamping. This phmp couldn't half shift it. Probably too much for what you need though.

Pump it into IBC containers either on a trailer or on a few pallets for a bit of head, then get an adapter to fit on the outlet with a 1" or 2" bayonet hose fitting. A suitable length of suction hose to get to the feeder and you will be away. For time saving, a 2" will be appreciated very quickly!!

Brave folks use a ball valve fitting in a feeder and a permanent supply... I am NOT that brave;)

PS, mine was running just fine at -13C this morning:D

Looks like brother has found a pump. Just have to wait for it to arrive and see if it works. Decanting into an incredible and lifting it until then.

it will be very hard on most pumps! it is the low viscosity and the corrosiveness.
I would have the tank in the air and use gravity, with a good size pipe.
we used to use a 4 inch outlet to get a decent flow.

Agree on gravity and big bore pipe! Diameter selected according to flow rate required...

I find a 2" hose will dump a lot of syrup into a container or on a bale VERY quickly... Too quickly sometimes ;)
