Sugar beet 15.6%
Dist maize grains 15.6%
Rolled barley 15.6%
molasses 15.6%
hipro soya 22%
rapeseed 15.6%

Nutritionist wanted us to put molasses in feed for cows, but as we have never fed it before and have no way of storing it or getting in the wagon easily we said could it be put in the blend we have, so he has come back with this, With 15.6% molasses in the blend will it be possible to get it out of the lorry or will it just be stuck in there.

Certainly won't be as dusty! I don't think that level of inclusion will be a problem, it soon loses its stickiness when mixed in.

its just that sometimes when for farmers deliver our blend at the moment it comes on a lorry with a door on the back that is about 18inches high and the gap is just so small for the blend to come out it take for ever to unload the lorry

Assume complete diet feeding, buy molasses in as liquid and store in IBC's?

What we do with DB easypro molasses. Have 1 large black drum and couple of IBC's. Put on 2-3 pallets so reasonable height. Only downside is that it is more manual work but at least you can use IBC's for other things if needed and not huge initial outlay.

Mix 50% molasses and 50% water before putting into mixer to prevent clumping?

A stack of pallets or sleepers as Big_D says will let you get the loader bucket under.
Ours sits on a couple of pallets so the watering can fits under, 2 cans full per straw bale for suckler cows over winter. High tech!

Just going to milkers,

+1 on IBC's. 5 ton will fit in 4 IBC's Either make a stand out of sleepers or just lift up with pallet forks each time

We had price for 5 ton pumped into IBCs at £198. Then lift it up every time but thought that was going to be a bit of a faff every time.

How high % could you go with molasses in blend, would it depend on other ingredients as well?

I had a offer from QLF couple weeks ago. 12 ton tank and pump with pipe work. £200 delivery then £500 invoice payable in 12 months. £100 credit for every 10 ton ordered. I.e if you feed 30 tons you pay £200 or 50 tons tank is free.
Tank and pump was something like £2500 to buy out right.

I won't go over 10 per cent with pot ale. Struggle to get it too run in creep feeders.

We bought this one, it holds 35tons so can get a tanker load and have a bit of a buffer. Mollases is heavier as far as I know. So would hold more weight.

I like too push the limits! It's a cheap source of protein.

Secret seems to be dump it spread out on floor for a few days before you need it. It then goes hard on floor. Put it through auger bucket into ton bags breaks it up again then seems to run fine.

we have molasses mixed with our blend. the firm I buy from soon learnt to deliver it on the day they mixed it and to have it in the compartment next to tail gate as can be bitch to get out if put in the lorry night before. But once its dumped on the floor it looses its stickiness after a couple of days. Cattle love it with molasses mixed in it and certainly better for us to handle as its not dusty.
