moo call

@Henarar has good experience, if I was living at the farm then I wouldn't bother, it would be better spending the money on a camera from @JP1 IMO.
jp1's cameras are a bloody sight more money than a moo call but you can buy ones that are cheaper and do the job that's what we have(y)
to my mind a camera and moo call compliment each other
how far away from the farm are you ?

As we speak, we have 5 at the same point. So which would I put a moo call on (or need 5) but a camera could see all 5 (except they are in an ancient building so lots of different "rooms" - but if we had a camera we could arrange them accordingly(y)

I think I was putting it too low, that screw on the back still concerns me though, it must irritate them.

I don think they're as dear as you may think, if you just have the sky, pile camera without backup, at least then you don't have yearly charges, and you can see if a calf is sucking,

I'm 4 miles away, hopefully ive only got 2 winters until we can live there. I was up there till midnight last night with a heifer. It's not much fun (n)

yep you can watch all five with one camera
horses for courses
I can put a moo call on a cow that's in any shed or outside but most calve in the calving shed with the camera but as I have said the moo call is useful for when we are asleep or have to do something else
Quite frankly a moo call is not big money and a camera set up is peanuts, have both like me (y)

Does anyone use traditional methods of monitoring flesh on pin bones? Bought 21 cows where they really didn't conform to this method, so bought a couple of moo calls to cover these, used them on a homebred cow first as a trial that I knew I could pin point time of birth, it gave no notification as I was calving her and wen head came out I got a text!! Sure suits some, but id rather know my cows and I wouldn't wake up to a text!! 2 for sale here!!

That was the issue here - relying on texts with our coverage is erratic to say least. Now am able to totter off out to yard (had hip replacement 31/01) one of my targets each morning is to go look at next one to calve, currently in one of the camera pens. I need to look at the animal and my walking stick's quite good for getting her to turn away to check udder and vag. Nothing beats looking and assessing. This one's quite a way off so I know I don't need to wake up as yet to check. However, the beauty of our new system is that we can all log in remotely, although because of our broadband speed/width, we know not to all try and do it at same time ! The heifer under CCTV at the moment is baby vet in making Pip's, who is currently over at Surrey Uni halfway through her vet course. At the weekends, she can do night checks and she is über excited that the first to calve in using the new system is her own heifer ! We had a cheap and cheerful CCTV system before - have used CCTV for years because if foaling TBs - and it worked really well and without doubt has saved thousands of pounds over the years ensuring we don't miss anything giving birth but with efficient software now in place for being able to log in and see all our pens wherever we happen to be, so allowing us to share the nighttime sitting up - that is going to make our lives slightly easier for sure! Plus, as this system records, great for double checking bullers, too.

As said above, my beef (), apart from fact you're relying on text message, is what if you have several calving at once, as we do if we've done ET work, for example. ? But again, if they work for your system happy days. Didn't work for us.
