Most cost effective size

I have had a quick search and scan for a similar thread, with no success as I’m sure it must have been asked before.

does anyone know the most cost effective size span to get the largest area covered. Assuming going too wide increases steel strength requirements and therefore cost.

Will be going up under permitted development for general Ag storage, am not constrained by the plot size.

What’s the consensus?

Depends on the use intend. If purely fir hay and straw I’d go higher and longer but fir cattle wider would make more sense. Ask around for general prices. Sometimes cancelled orders can be bought up cheaper in a size you’d normally be scared to buy. What ever you build in five years it will be too small. Cheap is cheap. And always will be. Adding an extra payment or two will make you more money and your life easier rather than having to make do and regret it.

Ultimately will end up as machinery storage I imagine, maybe a bay or 2 for straw but already have a decent straw sheds. Will ring round for prices, see what I find out.

Have this available.
40m wide, 42m long (7 x 6m)
But only 3 m to eaves at present, either extend or new posts,
Sited near you as well,

60ft to 80ft depending on altitude/wind/snow requirements and labour costs. if you have very cheap labour and at a higher altitude then 2x 40ft can be cheaper than an 80ft, but i doubt anyone will have much cheap labour around nowadays.

Someone who knew told me that over 50 feet the steels have to be substantially increased in spec.

50 feet ideal for cattle as the feed space and area of a bay are in the correct proportion for big cattle

80' wide and 20' bays. Height is cheap but colder, and harder to get past planners.
A friend put one up 80 feet wide and was really annoyed that if he had gone a couple of feet wider it could have had a new life as an indoor school for those horse things as I understand that they need 80 feet and the building measured 80 to the outside of the columns.
