Movement book records.

I report all cattle movements births online. I then save a copy of the report to a file on my computer. Do I still have to write every individual animal movement in my movemnt book? Surely if I was inspected I can just log on to bcms to see the animal history?

Got a f a inspection coming up so I was wondering. Simply cannot see the reason for having to write up in the book anymore. Every detail and more is logged on computer. I can go on bcms and look up the history of any beast that has at some point been on my holding.
Filling in the book is just making more paperwork if you ask me.

You are supposed to fill in the book as you go along as you may not register movements until the next day. Also how do you know where something has gone? The whole idea is its a quick and simple system you can chase up any errors. I also write notes in mine as we dont keep an electric system. The local authority Environmental health team will also check and sign the book. Soil association/FA also want to see where things have moved from and to and check you are keeping notes. As for births arent you supposed to note them in order with details etc cos you can register up to 27 days so in the meantime if its not noted how do you check you system is accurate and up to date?

Anything like our internet - you cant rely on it - BCMS can also have down time. ALways keep paper and electronic I find downloading the full herd is so useful for quick inspection and cross referencing.

I don’t keep paper records (only a wad of copies off the sheep movement forms as a faded/unreadable backup) and haven’t done for many years.

I’ve kept everything on a PC program (Shearwell Farmworks in my case) and, if I had cattle, it would register the movement with BCMS with a mouse click.
I’ve had several Ministry checks and numerous fa inspections since I’ve been using that system, and all have been happy that all the correct information is being recorded. No need to use the old paper book as long as you record the same information somewhere and can show it when asked.

Doesn't have to be recorded on paper format, can be a on a computer software program or even just a home made knocked up excel spreadsheet type format. (that's how I do mine), As long as it contains the necessary content and can be easily accessed during an inspection.
Unfortunately bcms records and printouts won't cut it. They don't have enough information on them. It is a ball ache, but it's one of those things we just have to do!!
