dont know if its any use to you , but we are using 123 sheets as bridging soft ware for our vat returns , the book keeping is done on a simple spread sheet . costs about £40 for the year , there was some free software but accountant could not get it to work for us.
This. About £40/yr, and it takes minutes including having to relearn how to use it every three months.

You will need to register for MTD fairly soon, as they are just chasing up the last ones on the old system now. I had a letter a couple of months ago, telling me that I had to do my next return on the MTD system.
You can still use a spreadsheet if you like, but will need to use some bridging software to be able to submit the return.

Have you registered for MTD, or still using the old online portal? I have been submitting VAT online for years via Quickbooks, but it still wasn't satisfactory for MTD.

No reason you can't carry on using spreadsheets for doing your accounts, if you want to.

Only the gov could come up with a system where you need a 3rd party piece of software to take the numbers you had in a spreadsheet and enter them into the same boxes you did it manually before

In my old Quickbooks desktop program, the software already filled in the boxes from your invoice entries, and submitted them automatically with a couple of mouse clicks.

MTD means that I have to export the numbers already generated and filled into those boxes as a spreadsheet file, then load them into a third party piece of software to submit them. :banghead: Or pay more out for different accounts software that will do the same job.

I think it's all part of a greater plan, self assessment is going to go MTD atvsome point and then the two systems will cross reference so they can check fraud and mistakes automatically. Wont stop large scale crims as they will already be one step ahead

What they want to do is to be able to peer into the programs and see the calculations so they can see how you got to the VAT numbers and then decide if an inspection is necessary but this first attempt is a bit of a dogs breakfast as they had to leave the option of these transport programs in there.

Even without the bridging software, MTD still only submits the same 9 boxes that we have always submitted. There is no way for HMRC to peer into any programs, regardless of which software you use.
