National Trust destroys decades-old Bassenthwaite grassland

Sorry, I'm with NT on this one. Bovey Tracey is hardly in the middle of a huge conurbation and the area in question has only been neglected for a very short time. The rare wildlife mentioned is likely to have moved in from elsewhere in the local area and will still be (where it came from) if anyone bothers to look.

People can't have it both ways as in "I should be able to do what I like with my land, AND tell others what to do with their's"
I'm with you as well. If you look at a map of the area it makes perfect sense to develop bonds meadow. I suspect that most of the complainants leave in the the next door 1980s/90s housing estate.

The biggest mistake the NT made was not flailing the undergrowth back that would have made it ecologically uninteresting.

When the National Trust takes on property it must decleared it alienate or inalienable, the former meaning it can be sold and the latter that it cannot.

So if the NT are selling this property, then it was their intention to do so from the day they took it on. Otherwise it would have even declared inalienate and could not be sold.

If you are ever mad enough to leave property to the NT, make sure it is on condition it is inalienable and they cannot flog it off to cover an ever greater salary for the chief executive!!

Let's see the NT treated the same way then!
Pretty disgraceful an NT tenant can do this, would think he it would not need a judge to say the tenancy needs reviewing. Also interesting to see the fine was dwarfed by the costs - m learned friends fees again

NT telling people to stay out a Dartmoor wood because of damage. There would be outrage if farmers shut or rerouted footpaths for the same reasons. As always it's one set of rules for them and a different set for us.

Pretty disgraceful you come to a conclusion just based on a newspaper clipping. Now go and look on the Tenants farmers subsidies section of TFF and the Natural England knows best thread for the inside story. (starts about halfway through the thread) You may be shocked when you read the other side of the story and is a warning to all farmers never to trust any schemes put forward by government bodies including Natural England.

"🌳 SAVE BONDS MEADOW - OUR STORY 🌳

BACKGROUND

Bonds Meadow is a three acre area of woodland nestled in the town of Bovey Tracey (adjacent to Bullands field) and owned by The National Trust. The land was donated to the Trust as part of the Parke Estate, in his will, by Major Hole, a local farmer and life-long resident of the town. Once maintained by the Trust this ‘meadow’ has, over the course of the past 12 or so years, been left to rewild and has become a much loved and flourishing area of natural beauty and biodiversity; home to a huge number and variety of pollinating insects and birds and protected species such as the dormouse. Over 700 species of flora an fauna have been recorded on the site, which has also been identified as forming a functional part of the local foraging area and ‘strategic flyway’ used by the native and rare Greater Horseshoe Bat; a priority species in the UK Post-2010 Biodiversity Framework.

Much to the local communities dismay, Bonds Meadow has been allocated as part of site BT1 (Dean Park) in Teignbridge District Council’s 2013-2033 ‘Local Plan’ for residential development; and The National Trust intend to sell it for this purpose, despite being Europe’s largest conservation charity, claiming to “stand up for nature” and “calling for environmental measures to secure the future of our much-loved wildlife, parks, and landscapes”. Housing developer Burrington Estates have already had their plans for phase one of the development approved, despite numerous objections and shortcomings in terms of planning policy; and have submitted indicative plans demonstrating their intention to build houses on the Bonds Meadow site."

Charming.
my issue with the above is "left to rewild", that is absolute tosh, it sounds like it has been left to turn into scrub. Rewilding, is animals, creating a mosaic of scrub, open pasture, woodland (sort of like the Savana), with the grazing animals being "moved on" by either apex predators (in the wild) or us herding them. I get irritated by this idea of abandoning land is rewilding, rewilding includes large grazing mammals and predators.

my issue with it that there are houses being built everywhere here, spoilling it in every way, towns and villages now are becoming full with people who know nothing of the area , its history, natural or otherwise, nor are they are interested in learning about it.
Money is all people seem interested in these days, very selfish World we now have, will end badly unless a lot of people sober up quickly i fear.

I have mentioned here in the past, I went camping to Snowdon, and stayed on the farm that the NT owns (which includes one side of Snowdon). I saw the farm manager working in the yard, so wandered over for a chat. While we were talking, he said the campers that camp there (remember it is on the side of the farm yard) have no interest in what is happening on the farm!

So you are advocating a total ban on all new building? Or just that which offends you?

You're sounding like a typical bloody Nimby!

So ask a very simple question or two? one, who are we building all these new houses for? two when will it end? not a question but as someone for my sins, whos made the mistake of living in the same area all my life? the system is breaking down now? roads overcrowded, sewage systems over loaded? electric overloaded, rubbish overloaded? in 10 years with the projected amount of new houses to be built just in my local area, what will be the quality of life be ?

yes exactly,
not enough local employment, single lane by roads with little or no passing places that cant cope with 2 lane volumes of traffic , poor or zero provision of sewage treatment and grey water outlet suitability sorted before permission granted the list goes on.
and the district councils loving it adding to their tax collection base, giving them even more money to add into their admin pool, topping up their office salaries and overall general wastage.
