Gave up trying to find a physical shop

Spent a while ordering online and returning what didn't fit

Ended up with Haix safety boots ("eagle 50 safety" high leg) THE most comfortable, hard wearing, lightweight, easy to lace up near £200 I've ever had

Hardly environmentally friendly all the delivery vans, and took a bit of patience, but there just aren't big stores with lots of stock around now?

Yep that's the trouble, all these websites with shed loads of boots, but unless you're buying what you've had before ,no good. Good shops with plenty of stock to try on just aren't there.
EVERYTHING is ONLINE . I need to try on, I will need a bloody van load before I find the right one.

How about Jo Royle in Buxton - https://www.jo-royle.co.uk/product-category/footwear/

There's a few places in Hathersage like Outside: (https://www.outside.co.uk/walking-gear/walking-hiking-boots.html) and even a GO Outdoors one too (https://www.ukclimbing.com/listings/outdoor_shops/go_outdoors_hathersage-509)

Hitch and Hike in Bamford: http://www.hitchnhike.co.uk/acatalog/mountain-footwear.html

Note that I've not been there for a while, so can't guarantee they're still going especially after the pandemic, except Jo Ryle who is still open so best to ring first.

Sheffield would have more places.

You could try Altberg in Yorkshire. They do lots of width fittings. There is a health warning. Not cheap!!!! Mine are lasting well. I find them very comfortable. TBH a lot of walking boots come up narrow on me, apparently these trekking types are much skinnier than the average farmer for some reason!!

Maybe a little closer to you than Penrith, Lockwoods at Leamington Spa are pretty good. First time I wore some of their boots, I went to look at some cattle in Switzerland. The owner only told me when I got there that they were up on the mountain - 7,000 feet up!!. Made it up and back without a blister.

Bakewell has plenty of outdoor shops as well, but more of the entry level brands like millets and mountain warehouse.
I have a pair of brasher boots from millets. They are really comfy, and lasting really well even though I don't look after them at all. The peter storm boots I had prior to them didn't last long at all.

https://www.altberg.co.uk/ Plenty of stockists listed on site. Won't come cheap but good quality and range of widths. Tend to be a bit heavier than many boots.

Bakewell also has some amazing bakeries in it selling cakes of all things. Would recommend.

You need to get your feet properly measured using a Brannock measuring scale. It saves a load of hassle when dealing mail order. Or, some brands have a comparison tool, so if you know your size in another make, they’ll match up your size. I’ve had a pair of Danner Acadia 8” boots for 6 months now, very expensive, but absolutely the best boots I’ve owned. I’m a uk size 14, so American is the way to go for me if I need good boots. Danner’s USA made range are stitch down, lace to toe build, which I find is extremely stable and supportive. I hike, hunt, work, drive and live in them daily. Yes they are expensive, yes it’s a pain buying from the land of the free and the home of the brave, but do you want to compromise on quality? They’re worn daily, and are no worse than the day they arrived. I’ve had the legendary German hiking boots, yeah, good 20 years ago, now they last 4 months before the soles de laminate, and then fall to bits. Obviously moving production to Asia hit quality.

I bought my Scarpa Trionics when I was 20, they lasted me 34 years!! So comfortable and so many miles out of them. I paid £120 for them in 1986 which was a lot of money back then.

Now got a pair of Scarpa Manta. Equally as good I reckon. I think they'll be the last pair I ever buy.

Good shop to deal with is V12 in Llanberis
