I took up mountain biking earlier in the year, noting extreme, no big jumps or anything!! Anyways, I have been using my brothers old bike and it's not great, I wanted to see that I was going to stick at it before wasting money on buying something better. I've been really enjoying it as a way to get off the farm so think I will treat myself, maybe new, maybe 2nd hand! What do I get? I'm not doing anything extreme so is it possible to get something that's ok for short road runs as well as rough trails in the woods? I'm 6', does anyone know what size frame I need? Any advice greatly appreciated!

I'd think about a Gravel bike - more road oriented than mountain oriented but can do trails and bridleways and lots of road miles.

I've got a pinnacle arkrose d3 which was good for the money.

I'd have a look at the Ribble and PlanetX equivalents too.

What do you want to spend?
Ok thanks I will look those up! I'd like to keep it sub £500 if poss which I suspect means new is out

I got a E fat bike earlier this year, it’s actually really good fun and very comfortable. The motor means I’ll tackle a lot of hills I wouldn’t usually. The trouble is no matter which way I go out out are yard it’s up hill which use to be a bit off putting as I was knackered before getting anywhere 😂. Not any more, just wish I had a bit more free time to use it.
It’s a bit dirtier than this now.

Paid £500 second hand, only had 8km on it.

I got this scott bike during the summer, cost 450 euro think it was, its a great all rounder I think, would be classed as a beginners bike I believe. having only had road bikes for years I forgot how much handier an offorad bike is, bought it to run on a few local trails but it's ended up being used for everything, used it to get back from dropping machinery, and no bother to head off on an hour or twos run around back roads u wouldn't dream of on road bike, even the missus nicks it the odd time!

Would imagine so. Crack on. (y)

New bikes around that budget will be all much of a muchness, and all well capable of bridleways and most trails in the UK. Might be a bit frail if you start clearing 30ft doubles, but doesn't sound like you're there yet. Might be a bit easier uphill or faster downhill if you spend three times that much, but you'll get there all the same.

In case you haven't already, get yourself a helmet. I'm not one of them helmet fascists - most cycling is extremely safe after all - but half the fun of mountain biking is in the unplanned trips to the undergrowth. And they happen surprisingly frequently.

I would look at second hand as you say as you can get more expensive bikes which are only a few years old or less much less than what they sold for initially. Try stick to better known brands as they will be easier to get upgrades and parts for and remember you can change near enough every part on the bike if you don't like it the local bike shop will be able to do most things for you

Just bought a giant trance 4 = very good bike for the money great on and off road - good around mtb i had a stumpjumpet but now in my older days prefer the trance as its a better allrounder
