I’m a bit unsure what I’ve to do with these new bvd regs. My herd is negative we vaccinate against at it and we test a batch of five calfss out of different lots every year. Am I to start using tissue sample tags ?

As far a I can see, you just carry on as before - Ensure that, when your annual test is due, your Vet blood tests 5 calves aged 9-18 months per separately manged group for Antibody. In the unfortunate event that one or more calves test positive or doubtful, your Vet will have to offer guidance on how to proceed. The College VI centres will offer no help whatsoever - all they seem interested in is making as much as possible from the fees they charge. So hopefully, your Vet will specialise in BVD and will be able to stand up to them on your behalf.

Having re-looked at the new Guidance for Phase 5, it is just about the worst-written, over-complicated, over-repetitive advisory booklet I have ever had the misfortune to see. But that is par for the course for Veterinarians and Government Officials who obviously have had no training in communication techniques and how to write in plain English.

When the scheme first stated, I knew that the terms ''Negative'' and ''Not-Negative'' would cause confusion.
