As part of Farm Compare, it has a basic lookup for crop protection products to allow you to lookup products and find equivalents. We get this data from the HSE.

What I didn't realise is how fast this data changes. over the past 17 months we have been monitoring the list, there have been 346 new MAPP numbers for products registered and 15 new Manufacturers/Authorisation Holders.

That's 20 new registrations a month. Most aren't new products, just new names for existing actives, but it does make it hard to keep up with.

My understanding is all these type of products will need mapp numbers next year - so they are probably getting ahead of the game.

For Farm Compare we have created our own MAPP numbers for things like Cropspray 11E so it can also be compared.

It always amazes me that the same company will sell the same chemical, in the same concentration and formulation, under two or three names. What's the use in that?

As part of Farm Compare, it has a basic lookup for crop protection products to allow you to lookup products and find equivalents. We get this data from the HSE.

What I didn't realise is how fast this data changes. over the past 17 months we have been monitoring the list, there have been 346 new MAPP numbers for products registered and 15 new Manufacturers/Authorisation Holders.

That's 20 new registrations a month. Most aren't new products, just new names for existing actives, but it does make it hard to keep up with.

I am not so sure these are all new products nor are they new names for existing products - some seem to be re-issues under the same name with changes in authorisation such as extensions of approval because of the slow progress in re-authorisation at EU level. It is very confusing - often the only way to fathom what is going on is to ring the product specialist at the manufacturing company.

Often you see a product up for withdrawal, then lo and behold it is re-issued with a new MAPP number and different label after re-authorisation. And sometime it is never seen again.

Biological pesticides have always needed MAPP numbers and approval - they claim to control pests/diseases and are therefore pesticides in the eyes of the law. They may however have less stringent data requirements for approval than chemicals.

Some products fall outside the scope of the pesticide regulations because they work by physical action (but other ones that work by physical action are deemed within the scope). It is not at all clear.

Quite! In my innocence, i didn't think they were classed as pesticides.....I guess that if they were used as such, which i didn't realise they were, then the approval makes sense. In my limited experience, they are phrased/used as plant growth enhancers, among other non-pesticide descriptions - For example, in brews. Are they used foliarly too?

This is why we all need to keep track of any older products in the chem store - I was caught out with a changed MAPP number last year, during an assurance inspection.
Although the product was still current (same name and manufacturer) the change in number meant having to dispose of a part used can at significant expense

I wonder if it is worth getting your agronomist to audit of your pesticide store contents to avoid this, there is usually a use up period after notice of a replacement by a new MAPP number?

Many biological products are offered for non-pesticidal use as 'plant tonic' or some other weasel words. It is unclear if these are effective.

Ones registered as pesticides must meet certain criteria of effectiveness, as well as safety, so can be bought with more confidence. Being costly they are not widely used on broad acre crops.

Homemade brews, compost tea for example, are not usually offered for sale, their mode of action is unclear and their effectiveness is 'contested'. Home made brews not offered for sale are not in breach of pesticide regulations, but if offered for sale must not claim pesticidal or plant growth regulatory effects.

I thought these snake oils were about to be more heavily regulated?

These products can only be sold as fertilisers or as pesticides - clearly pesticides are inapplicable as the products would have to pay a humungous cost for data package, demonstrate efficacy and pay for the approval process. If this is out then the only other basis for efficacy is as a fertiliser.

There is provision in the 2019 EU fertiliser legislation that allows these borderline products ;

Certain substances, mixtures and micro-organisms, referred to as plant biostimulants, are not as such inputs of nutrients, but nevertheless stimulate plants’ natural nutrition processes. Where such products aim solely at improving the plants’ nutrient use efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress, quality traits or increasing the availability of confined nutrients in the soil or rhizosphere, they are by nature more similar to fertilising products than to most categories of plant protection products. They act in addition to fertilisers, with the aim of optimising the efficiency of those fertilisers and reducing the nutrient application rates. Such products should therefore be eligible for CE marking under this Regulation and excluded from the scope of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 [i.e. pesticide legislation] of the European Parliament and of the Council1 . Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 should therefore be amended accordingly.

Adjuvants have ADJ numbers, but I can see for comparative reasons why you might give them a MAPP number.
