Change the oil pump on early Ford 2.2 diesels and they will last as long as any other engine ever made in the same class. The Ford V6 diesel ‘Lion’ engine used by Land and Range Rover plus Jaguar has a very high failure rate. Nothing whatsoever to do with electronics or emission equipment. They just didn’t get the basic design of the crankshaft right from the start. Basically the engine is, relatively speaking, absolute garbage. It goes well until it doesn’t.

Sorry mr Wikipedia

lot of strain on modern small engines boosting hard. Can’t keep boost pipes on them 2.2’s
Never heard of a boost pipe blowing on one. Another mechanical problem, of a most trivial kind this time and very easily sorted by any competent mechanic.
My Land Cruiser 100 with its 4.2 litre diesel had an intercooler pipe blow. So what? Wasnt even worth mentioning.

Why are you so aggressive mr Wikipedia?
I have 3 familys members with the 2.2 defenders and keeping the boost pipes on is a mare but they tow all the time so are working hard. Apart from that they haven’t been too bad but they aren’t on silly miles yet so the jury is still out.

He said I couldn’t order with it. He seemed to think it wouldn’t return

mines been on order since may and still can’t give me a date,so far they’ve removed the digital driver display and clear sight mirror from my original order, last conversation I had with dealer they showed me latest information from JLR and it was the tow bar and 22” wheels holding it back from entering the build pool…personally I don’t think I’ll see it this year 🤷🏻‍♂️

For OE or aftermarket? Any particular make? Much of muchness costwise and easy enough to do.
Good question. I believe that there is a kit to replace the vane variable displacement pump with a simple and proven-reliable design. I’ve no idea which is ‘best’ but I reckon that the current version sold by Ford will be a modified and sorted design compared to the early failure-prone pumps.

I’m actually having an issue finding anyone to change the pump. My usual mechanic is of an age where he doesn’t want this job even though he gave my Ranger a thorough service otherwise including changing the auto box and rear diff oil plus replacing a rear spring.

I've seen the Gear Kitted Pumps alternatives. But no information as to manufacturer or part number to chew on etc.

I was led to believe a Ford Geared Pump replacement by a Dealer wasn't from the Ford Parts Bin.
