New land

We've taken on some light ground not far away. New road just gone through 2 fields and it's not been farmed for 7 years.

Sprayed both fields off and 1st field we have put grass seeds in eventually

Was a nightmare to plough because of couch grass, blocking up all the time

Ended up rotavating it twice, power harrowing it to death to get rid of lumps of weeds and mat of roots. Broadcasting seeds on and rolled in. Looks okay

The other field we want wheat in it but worrying if that'll be the same nightmare. What's the best plan of attack? Just top it, rotavate it, beat the root system to death and then sow it

Ideally want to plough it but whether it's a plough with just skimmers or one with discs as well it made no difference

Any advice would great

If you have rotavated it once already, I'd spin 200kg/ha seed on and rotavate it again, no more than 4" deep. Roll it down tight and leave it. If there's a crop in spring happy days, Broadway Star to clean it up.
If not, it will probably plough by then, and spring crop.

As @glasshouse said plenty of the disc then power harrow before sowing .
You could plough it without to much bother from dirt and lumps but you should have enough tilth after the disc .
Wireworn , slugs etc might be more of a problem after such " abandoned " fallow .

Dont try and drill it unless you have a wide clearance disc drill, the wrack will just drag
Many yrs ago i got 100 ac that had been jungle for 8 yrs
Ploughed some uncut, that worked best
Drilled it with old massey 30 as contractors amazone combi just choked
Broadcast was next option
Half ofit is under tarmac now

With roots, sometimes you just need time, heavy disc...then disc...power harrow etc...then roll it so root mass is contacting dirt so breaks down quicker.

I did my first paddock this year at my new farm...never ever been plowed...as in never before (oz)...root mass was 200mm thick in places...headache. but sowed with grass n clover see pic.

Moldboard not popular in oz but is used sometimes to flip it to get root mass to rot.

Good luck.
