New Ranger vs New Amarok

So they’ve got the same chassis, gearbox, engine and suspension. Body panelling are different marginally but effectively they are the same vehicle.
The price difference is £5000-£6000 for the same model with the Amarok being more expensive. However the Amarok has 5 years warranty where as the Ranger has 3. The Amarok price also includes 5 services and 3 MOT’s. So for the extra money you are getting 5 services, the MOT’s and 2 years extra warranty. I’ve got to spend some money to offset tax and we are due to change a vehicle anyway so it makes sense. I also know where there is a supply of both options. Having viewed them the Amarok looks nicer and the interior is better than the Ranger but it’s the money I’m thinking about. I’m doing 15,000 miles a year so which one will loose the most? This would be the 3.0l v6 engine as well.
My friend has a new shape 2.0l ranger and he likes it. I’ve driven it a few times and it’s ok. I’ve only driven the Amarok once but as said they are the same thing. The Ford garage is closer than the VW garage as well.

don't go near the 2.0 litre engine,fitted in quite a few makes now,wet cambelt :banghead:
service schedule to replace is 10 years or 120k
they usually fail 60-70k :mad:
The 3.0 V6 track record is only slightly better, tbh both benefit from more regular oil changes and yes do not try and get past half way re the 2.0 cambelt interval

wow,not done anything with the bigger engines,doesnt sound good then.on the 2.0
rac and aa are changing them at 50k and don't seem to be having any major problems now but before this had nearly half the fleets down.
only real fix is new engine,dealers tried all other fixes and they only last a few weeks before it goes bang anyway :banghead:
just mot'd 69plate transit 71k with a shiny new engine :eek:

Sell on at 3 years for Fords......?




Oh Isuzu, why on earth did they make you stop selling that brilliant 2.8 engine.... ? :unsure:

I know,It really boils my p@ss,on the ecoboom (as we call it in the trade) engine they were using the excuse the wrong oil was used at services etc (they are using that excuse as we speak on the wetbelt) until all the ones that were dealer serviced with the correct oil started failing :banghead:

The 3.0 V6 in the newest rangers and VW equivalent is that from the PSA stable used in discos which has a reputation for snapping cranks. Many reworks and mods later it should be better but the main issue stems from a design flaw in the block so time will tell.

didn't realise that.from what ive seen/heard (from mates in aa/rac) about new landrovers is that they are no better :banghead:

Well why didn't you ssay Landrover 110 five door.

I really don’t like the defenders to be honest. I think they are sparse inside and the insurance costs are sky high according to a friend who has one. The first year he paid £700. Last year it was £1700 and he’s got to renew in April so just waiting for the quotes now. I can insure a £50,000 Amarok for £700 with the Nfu.

Possibly VW will offer a better care package via that 5 yr warranty and service package that you mentioned?

Maybe the latter is an attempt to keep the engines going....?

I think that’s the way I’m going with it. No service or mot costs for 5 years is worth around £3000. Then with the extended warranty it’ll be worth a bit more if I decide to sell it after 50k miles.
