Looks like HMRC are starting to do "roadshows", and group meetings about their digital changes and conquest to be the first in the World to do so ?
Received email about one today .

Log into it and give it a go. Theres a 14day trial with it. And i think it will export to a spreadsheet.Do you deal with Charlies? It would be interesting to see what it made of their invoices....
I used receipt bank for a while but went back to just using Xero as didn't find it much of an improvementSo there is an app to convert a graphic to a Xero entry or entries? Id be interested in that. To me that is progress. But you say it takes half an hour?!
Lots of accountants use Xero or QuickBooks, some are partnering with both, ask them to help setup your account, it's not a massive job.I think it will need serious collaboration with my accountant if it isn't to end up as a serious mess if I'm honest. I just don't have the accountancy skills to set this up properly from the start. I think that if I go my own way with Xero or QuickBooks then it wont match my accountants requirements and I will have wasted much time and money.
With any serious solar flare or EMP it will be more like the middle ages. The 1st World (and second one) has gone so far down the technology route that any significant disruption to the Internet & world communication systems would push all those countries back to third world status. Just look at the chaos caused when a few customers get locked out of their online banking!
Those of you who feel that you will struggle with more formal accountancy systems might well consider finding a book-keeper.
.
There will be many farms, who are in this boat- forced to produce digitised accounts, but who aren't bothered how, or just aren't computer literate enough to try.
Suspect several agents will suddenly add that service to their portfolio of services, just like they did when SPS/ BPS came along.
Those of you who feel that you will struggle with more formal accountancy systems might well consider finding a book-keeper. There are many around who have experience and qualifications, having worked for chartered accountants prior to childraising, who undertake small company accounts, often to work from home semi time. They tend to warrant £12-£15 hour, much less than the accountants rate and, arguably, cheaper than a farmers 'out of hours rate' !
Most smaller business proprietors would benefit in spending more 'quiet time' on their business, not 'in' their business.

So do you cost up a purchase before ordering?Maybe so, but I consider it valuable to know exactly where my finances are at any given point, and being in charge of what is paid/whether an invoice is correct.

Do you read invoices when received? Do you monitor your bank balances on a daily basis?
This is control of your business, together with monitoring debtors, creditors, correspondance etc.
That is the basis upon which you would instruct such a bookkeeper. You can be captain of a ship without oiling the engine and scrubbing the decks.
I called HMRC VAT yesterday for an exception...they said they have not finalised anything as yet ...seems it could be another government shambles
The Cloud is an excellent way of doing business and keeping back-ups of your local records. However lots of the stuff you take for granted everyday is actually Cloud based and only Cloud based. Stuff like your BCMS movement records and passports only have a physical back-up while VAT and your dealings with Government are almost entirely dependent on the cloud to produce any paper it generates. No way would I trust anything i valued or needed to the cloud
This is no more reliant on the Cloud than the way you submit VAT returns currently. You will, if it ever happens, still have the option of using your own computer program on your own machine to record transactions. No way would I trust anything i valued or needed to the cloud
Dont disagree with much of that but if I lose stuff thats my fault but if I rely on the cloud etc then its still me that carries the can for their problems despite often paying for it to be safe, also its hard to hack a memory stick. Its the way things are going but i would always want physical records. I won a very expensive planning battle because I had kept a bit of paper the council denied existed anywhere so am varyThis is no more reliant on the Cloud than the way you submit VAT returns currently. What if your own machine is lost in a fire or flood though and your internal backup had not backed up to one of your external backups for a while and both external ones were fried anyway because you did not swap them regularly and had them both by the side of your computer. We all know that at least one copy [swapped at least weekly] should be stored away from the main building and I'm sure you do so currently as per best practice.

I humbly beg to differ.....Steevo.As government departments go HMRC have their act together a bit better than RPA at least.
