Nicholson steerage hoe

Thanks @Exfarmer .

Looking at it today, it appears there's 16 mounts for hoes on it, but only about half of them have an arm attached. Of those, only 4 have the spring mechanism that triangulates with the arm and the mounting point, if you see what I mean.

There's a spare spring sitting on the top of it,running along the frame just to the left of the 3 point hitch.

Then the hoes themselves seem to be a variety of sizes, including some (but not many) side hoes as well as mainly ducks feet / arrow style ones.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is going to be a waste of time, but if someone has some bits knocking about I might be able to get something sorted, as it seems fairly easy to take it all apart and adjust it etc.

Thanks,
NP.

Just to explain a little more about why I am even thinking of bothering with this, I am planning on growing a trial area of soy beans this year. The drill I use is an 8 foot MF30, and so I figured if I can set the hoe up with the same spacings as the MF30, I can hoe between the rows while the soy plants get going.

It may all be a really bad idea, but I won't know for certain until I've tried (probably several years running, as I don't give up easily / learn quickly).

I hate to say it but that model was the the one they built for Noah.
I must confess i think it highly unlikely you will get parts.
There is a guy in Lincolnshire who may still have some but honestly I would try and find a front mounted version.
I cant think of his name but it is Les something, there may be someone on here can fill in , if not I will find it in the office tomorrow

Ha - @Exfarmer - but I'm using loads of Noah's other old gear. Some of it he used as an anchor I think, judging by the rust.

Thanks though - and if you can find Les' details, so much the better.

I would have preferred a front mounted one, but there is very little of this type of kit for sale down this way, and I like to be able to go and look at stuff when I buy it (though anyone would be forgiven for thinking I had a blindfold on when I got this...).

Front mounted is the best as it moves with your steering. Webb used to do a f don’t mounted 6 row adjustable with L blades and A shares. Spares used to be available from Spaldings and Pan Anglia. There will be quite a few of these around in the eastern counties I would of thought. The A shares will push larger weeds sideways into the rows if the weeds get too well rooted.

Ha ha - no, is that what you put a photo of on TAW? I took it to bits and sold all the parts separately on eBay. Actually made a profit, not counting my time of course. So obviously I didn't really make a profit...

I replaced it with a Ransome's steerage hoe with a seized steering box.

I then replaced that with a front mounted Webb hoe which came with loads of spares, but an antiquated front mounting bracket that clamps onto the front axle and keeps falling off.

You live and learn.

You’re spot on, it is. Currently set for 2 rows with a few uprights removed but I need to go out to 3 somehow. I’ve also got an old front mounted one which might be similar to what you’re describing and need to find a way to fit it to my 35x. Just bought a second one in an online sale which I’ll collect in the next couple of days. I’ll put a picture or 2 on here and pick your brains for ways to fit it if you don’t mind?
