no backspace

i have a hp pavilion laptop. the backspace key has stopped working except when i am typing. any ideas? tia.
Sorry, bit confused by 'only when I'm typing' - when else would you use it?
Firstly, have you rebooted the PC?
Is there some grit stuck under the key perhaps? Maybe try the airline to blow they keyboard clean?
Or is it a software issue? Maybe go in device manager and remove the keyboard, then restart and see?

If I am on the forum and want to go back from a thread to the main page for example the backspace doesn't work however if I am typing say a reply the backspace dies work. This applies to other apps as wel so not a tff fault. Hope that makes myproblem clear. Thanks.

So, you want to go back a page by pressing the backspace key but it no longer works, is that it?
What browser are you using?
Does Alt and left arrow work?

i'm om firefox. yes alt and left key work.
Hmm
It doesn't work for me either - maybe it's an 'upgrade'

I find that a bonus actually ☺ as I sometimes used to hit it by mistake!!

EDIT - yes, it's an upgrade!
To prevent user data loss when filling out forms, we’ve disabled the Backspace key as a navigation shortcut for the back navigation button. To re-enable the Backspace keyboard shortcut, you can change the about:config preference browser.backspace_action to 0.

thanks, as you may have concluded i'm no computer whizz kid.

Since I am a numpty a step by step guide would be appreciated. Thanks.
:)
OK - you maybe need two pages of instructions open together, sorry.
Basically, open about.config with these instructions

Then, when it gets to
Modifying preferences
you need to look at this page
which tells you to search for
"browser.backspace_action"
Then change the value to 0 as in the first page you opened.

Hope that makes some sort of sense ...
:ROFLMAO:
