30,000 muppets who don't understand that 'no farmers, no food' is twaddle. The number of farmers in the industry bears no relation to the amount of food produced. It's called consolidation.
Why call farmer's supporters 'Muppets'? Consolidation leads to reduced choice, opportunity and diversity. It also ultimately leads to loss of control.

It also leads to less farmers. Hence my point; there is no correlation between the number of farmers and the amount of food produced. Hence it is a stupid slogan, not because it wont catch the public eye but because it shows the farmer/s behind this don't understand the issues. And if you don't understand the issues, how can you know what is needed ?

If it was just consolidation. But it's not. This time it's about taking land out of production for the green agenda. Production will fall. Crap land will go first but at current grain prices £170/t, wild flowers will be an attractive option to many. Payment needs to rise though!

'We oppose being paid to take land out of production, because you wont have any food, but if we are to take land out of production we demand higher payments of taxpayer money for doing so'.

Will get my banner made up (y) .

If you really want consolidation, remove any payments of any kind. Let market forces sort it out. Fine by me.
'Payments need to rise' comment, I was making the point that taking land out of production won't happen with derisory payments. But maybe the whole plan is to slash food subsidies to producers.?

I don't want consolidation. It means, by definition, I am out of a job. I am assuming the people behind the tractor rally don't want consolidation. If so, then they need to say what they want to happen to prevent this, to reverse the trend. Because saying 'you wont have anything to eat' is inaccurate - food will still be produced, but by less units - and does nothing to tell the public and the politicians what action is needed.

Would probably mean the end for our farm too tbh. The end game surely has to be to enable the land managers, whatever form that takes, to make a living out of whatever it is 'they' want us to do. At the moment, they don't want to subsidise food but 'public money for public good'. Obv feeding the nation or even the world doesn't figure much at the moment!

We're looking at a 5 way whammy right now.

  1. Trade deals potentially creating flood of cheap imports.
  2. Burden of regulation
  3. BPS evaporating
  4. SFI just replacing cropping on an income foregone basis (hence we lose the BPS adding to our bottom line)
  5. Red Tractor's GFC adding cost burden to us
You can see why farmers would protest.

Interesting views on the increasing regulations on imports coming into force today.

Moving produfrom low to medium risk and increased cost of checks "pushing up food prices" or meaning we are more competitive.

Large scale imports are not adversely impacted but smaller scale ones could be.

Some Regulations have actually eased , no cross compliance etc. What has increased?

BPS evaporating, been on the cards for a long long time, but lots have only just realised.

SFI is optional, was talking to an arable farmer 2 weeks ago who was so happy BPS and cross compliance has gone. Still running a very profitable business in the SW. Perhaps BPS has shielded some from reality of profitable farming,

GFC isn't in place, and in no way should is be adopted in its current guise.
Interesting the biggest advocate of it I have spoken to represented the beef industry! What are beef farmers doing about that?

WHO was that then? Not the same lot that wanted cattle finished quicker (inevitably using more concentrates) so they wouldn’t be around emitting methane for so long?
