No PMSG!

The problem stems from the factory making heparin for human use and pmsg for animal use has had to be split into segregated units. It's a requirement Europe wide. Pmsg is used extensely in pigs and the 'other' product from the 'other' factory is going to that market. I'm looking into gnrh products for predictable ovulation in ewes today. I'm sure others will be too.

I found this yesterday, which I hadn't seen in the press before (not that I read papers very often):
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4159146/Inside-vampire-horse-farm.html

"The EU has said it’s considering action, but so far nothing has happened. No more horses need to die."

I wondered whether that might have anything to do with it? Supply stopped in Germany back in the early summer, with a government that is more 'green' than ours.

Update on previous.
Some artificial breeding set ups are looking at Aussie import of PMSG.
Additionally, after some investigation on alternative GNRH products with Vets who specialise in artificial sheep breeding the news will not be great for those relying on frozen semen AI. The products Chorulon and Receptal have both been used to induce ovulation in ewes but poor data in timing post sponge removal for fixed time frozen AI but good results with natural service/fresh semen AI where timing is less critical.
Results with natural/fresh 50-55hrs post sponge removal will be similar to PMSG especially in teased ewes but no extra ovulations, just primary follicles. For frozen semen results will be as low as 30% even with teased ewes as timing is more critical with semen being less viable and again no 'superovulatory' effect.
Talk to your Vets and AI firms. They are all coming up with options.

Thank you! That is really helpful information. I'm with a big vet practice so I'm hoping they will be clued up on this and can help sort something out.

So just to be clear. I'm chucking my teaser out this weekend to 'break in' the shearlings. I was planning on sponging and putting tups in later this year for April lambing. Am right in thinking I'd be fine without PMSG? As they'll already be cycling.

Yes that will work no problem, if they are already cycling no need for PMSG.

^ this. @waltonCharollais or should it be 'waltonsomethingelsenow', pull the sponges on day 14, rather than day 12 as you would to jab with PMSG. That used to be on the data sheet, I don't know if it still is though, as the same company sells (if they feel like it) PMSG too.

Got mine with 24 hours to spare. My vets had to go through a local breeding service that I believe jumped through the hoops to import it. It's called Stimovar and is more concentrated at 7500Iu per 20ml. I'm guessing next year could be interesting as could the price this year. I bought it without asking and I'm dreading the bill at the end of the month.

If you have any friends in ROI there is no shortage of Foligon which is the same as PMSG only sold under different brand. According to our vet anyway.

Alot of people in NI have had to do that this year with little to no PMSG.

Speaking to a friend he had managed to get some out of a boot of an irishmans car in carlisle market. Doesnt get more dodgy than buying drugs from stranger out of his car boot does it

I'm not sure, is it more dodgy buying from someone you've never met, who sends you a parcel in the post?

Needn't have worried as ET vet has supplied enough (not priced yet though:eek:). Personally I'd be wary using any 'doubtful' supplies in an ET program where you are investing £500/donor, and one wrong move could mean zero results. Recips or naturally mated ewes, particularly at this time of year, would be less of an issue.

Hi all,

Need some advice/opinions in this area. We tried sponging for the first time this year for a smaller lambing window to better fit in with our day jobs  We applied sponges end of Aug and removed after 12 days and put the tup in with them, they didn't have PMSG as we couldn't get any but as not AI-ing thought it would be OK. 5 of the 6 ewes were covered within a few days. Trouble is none of them caught and have all been tupped a second time :( We're using a new ram lamb as a tup this time. With my lack of experience sponging I'm not sure whether it's down to the sponging or the ram is duff! :scratchhead:

Thoughts?

The sponging worked fine, as it brought the ewes into heat. If he covered them OK then your ram is either duff, or just putting the semen in the wrong place.

Get the ram tested.

Had a client get a big fine for buying dodgy drugs. Beware. I have a heap of stories.

There's a steady supply of the imported product currently. I've had no trouble sourcing.
