Noisy Merlo gearbox.

As per the title, I have just bought a 28.7, as a second telehandler to back up our P40.7.
It had a grumbling noise which I knew about.
I am fairly sure that it is coming from the high gear in the two speed gearbox, and wonder whether anyone else has experienced a similar issue or had to rebuild that gearbox.
Apart from this issue the rest of the machine is very tidy hence my purchase.

I think so personally, theres a gear in between the hydrostat shaft an the lower drive shaft an there was some serious play in it so put extra pressure on the hydrostat

Had the same issue on 34.7, get it out before it goes proper as we did. Dead easy to fix and cheap too. It's probably just a bearing gone.

If it’s gearbox get it done before it causes damage to the gears and won’t be a hefty bill. There is and upgraded heavier duty bearing you can fit as well which I would recommend

Ouch. Seems as though it may be tomorrow’s job, since it’s thoroughly wet here now. I did drop the oil and change it today. Not much contamination, although unfortunately Merlo don’t fit magnetic drain plugs.

More often then not if gearbox has an issue the bung will be full of metal fillings

We removed the box this morning;couldn’t see anything wrong apart from a weeping seal on one of the output shafts. I took the box and hydro to the local Merlo dealer. Their fitter kindly checked it over for me, noting that the box has had the updated bearing and cover fitted. He declared it all very clean and correctly adjusted, and replaced the weeping seal, retorquing the fixings on the end of that shaft.
So tomorrow’s job is to refit it all, given that it should be dry overhead on Saturday.
At least I know the box is all good now.
Many thanks to R C Boreham (dealer) for a great service.

Have you inspected the gear fitted to the hydro motor? I have known people repair gearboxes with new gears and not replace the one on motor and then have it cause a rumble.

Yes all checked over thanks.
All looked perfect. Fitter said normally when he sees one it’s in a bit of a state! He even had a look at the needle rollers through the lubrication oilways.

You might find the noise might be coming from one of the differentials and traveling, Ive seen people remove the gearbox before and it’s really been a front or rear diff issue. Best to drain the oil and check both
