Well it's only ever about supply and demand anyway, or trader anticipation of such.

My point really was there is one very unusual thing propping this baby up. It's fascinating that SMP is not too far from intervention value.

I do take your point but all you are basically talking about is supply and demand currently demand is stronger than supply by this time next yr I suspect you are right and prices will be falling that is what the European futures market is suggesting as supply from all the main dairy trading areas will be increasing unless there is a major weather event.3 yr cycles is the new norm boy and girls. But that does give us 12 months of high prices to prepare for the follow events.

Only other uncertainty is brexit and possibility of wto tariffs

BORDERS .. Those chummleys in the south of Ireland seem to be forgetting where 65% of there exports go. ffs. politics . isn't the tichashoch gay .. or am I wrong on that one .. Do you think half the priests down there might be thinking he's well hot ... thoughts please .. jtt

My thoughts are that I don't really see what a priest wanting to grab a gay toaiseach has got to do with the price of milk???

All this talk of higher prices and anticipating a subsequent crash has me worried all the same. Not sure if accepting such volatility is the best way forward for any industry. But what can be done. Is there any plans to prevent prolonged periods of prices below cost of production

Even the oil cartel isn't able to get a good handle on it these days.

The Americans are using margin protection insurance, which I think the federal government is subsidising. Must be working well for them, going by their unrelenting output.

Anybody else got wet ground at the moment? Round baled a field last Tuesday, never marked it. Bogged in it tonight with the pickup! Know the weather isn't goin to be good this week cos I'm getting my annual week in a caravan at the Port starting Monday! Typical.

Second cut in 3 weeks ago. A small bit of 3rd cut to do but will be end of august before it's ready. Nothing done round here last week and as you say not looking good for this week. What about yourself?
Second cut in lovely and dry about a fortnight ago, whole crop in last week in nice condition too. I feel sorry for anyone with grass still to cut, I think it bad enough that I can't get slurry out to get ploughing done.

It's not even august yet, surely be another couple of decent spells yet!
Having said that we're all done but would like to keep grazing for a couple of months so less heavy showers would be good.

Cut silage last Monday and had it in on Tuesday dry. Wanted it cut a week earlier but just need to wait on contractor coming. Gonna try for a third always good weather in September!

It's getting pretty poor over this way. We had thunder and torrential rain most of yesterday afternoon, and very wet again today with thunder. I went out checking cattle yesterday and the wee burns and rivers were all up over the broo. Outlook is bad for this week. Will have to consider housing heifers if it persists at this rate. Talking to my uncle this evening, and he reckons the grazing for his beef cattle is pretty near an end for the season. Luckily he has sheep to clean it up.

It's no consolation, but it's the same all over the country. If the forecast says 3mm of rain, in reality you can add a 1 to the front of that. I'm hoping we can get to Friday without having to house and hopefully by then the worst will be over. Depressingly, it's what I expect in a summer now, the rain we get in June and July now, would have historically covered all 3 summer months. Climate change??
