Not as bad as they thought

Just to be devil's advocate (i.e. I don't believe what I'm saying) they are actually saying the incidence of cases and deaths so far is similar to that of seasonal flu. Possibly COVID measures have kept it down to this level?

(Early predictions were based on no measures being taken?)

Since the WHO got us into this mess it's been difficult to believe anything they say and I won't be counting on them to get us out of it.
I agree entirely, China (the CCP) and the WHO have an awful lot to answer for, but we are where we are, and this virus is simply harder to overcome than other previous ones. We'll get there, but it probably won't be as fast as a lot of people are thinking it will. But we'll get there. :)

Why did they get us into a mess? They reported the information thy had available at the time, and it was up to individual countries to make their own plans or implement their existing pandemic plans.
I don't know, why did they get us into a mess? Countries take their lead from the WHO, it's a bit difficult to implement the correct plans when you're not given the correct information.

But that is only a selected bit of the briefing.

The WHO held a press briefing on the 14 January during which it stated that, based on experience with respiratory pathogens, the potential for human-to-human transmission in the 41 confirmed cases in the People’s Republic of China existed: “it is certainly possible that there is limited human-to-human transmission”.

As they gained further information:
Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe
25 January 2020, Copenhagen, Denmark

The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak in China is a sign that every country needs to be ready to timely detect and manage outbreaks of any type. .

And it still seemed to take some countries weeks to understand this.

it’s the part of the briefing that the WHO themselves selected to Tweet.

And it's not incorrect "Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human to human transmission" It does not say the WHO have found no clear evidence of human to human transmission. They can only go on the information supplied by the country concerned. And they were certainly suspicious enough even then to state “it is certainly possible that there is limited human-to-human transmission”.

Limited human to human. They had a hospital full of folks with an identified novel corona virus. Were they serving bat soup in hospital? Come on man, I get all the Trump hate - but the CCP government and their grip on the WHO is out of control.

Anything is going to be limited if you only have 41 cases to go on.

Dude, your a scientist. 41 cases together at the early identification of a new disease is of the charts.

This is the plot for MERS, which the WHO called deeply troubling and concerning after 5 cases. But it didn’t come from China.

It would be a very brave or idiotic scientist who advised the world to lock down on the basis of 41 people who had contracted a flu like virus, with the only source of information on its virulence coming via the Chinese government.
