Oilseed rape presses

Hi everyone

Just wondered if anyone would like to share their experiences and knowledge about cold pressing rape. Thinking about a press that could press 2 tonne per day for feeding to our onsite laying hens.
What is the best press/company to deal with? How much filtration would I need as I'd be feeding the rapemeal as well.

Thanks in advance

Tried that but found feed consumption went up and blamed it on not getting every seed cracked as it went though the mill, pressing seams more precise way with not too many set up costs if I'm not missing anything! Will do some phoning round tomorrow to find out more.

Know it's a long way from you but guy I know has been cold pressing OSR for quite a few years now and would be worth speaking to.

if you tweet @Llyrderwydd

I have to say that the contact details may no longer work as I am unsure if they are still going as the plant was in the middle of nowhere and they were importing/exporting all the OSR but nothing ventured etc

No selling as as cold pressed rapeseed oil to the public ,

Have you been doing that for long? Its something I had a look at a while ago, doesn't seem a ridiculous outlay to set up a small operation. Is it something you'd recommend looking into?

There is a lot of work to get your money back - farmers markets, advertising, going round farm shops or small local shops. Then you have to find customers for it, and at a premium over bog standard 'vegtable oil' found in any super market (which if you look at it, is probably oilseed rape oil anyway).

We used to supply someone who did it on a pretty decent scale - producing maybe 8-10t/month (a lot of 500ml bottles), and getting cash out of him was very tiring. From his side he said he couldnt afford to pay until a few months later because cash flow was difficult. We eventually went our separate ways.

too many people get hung up on the pressing of the oil. you can buy IBC's of cold pressed oil, you can even buy it already bottled. Here's the tricky bit.....designing a pretty label with a lovely story. Bit like the explosion in "artisan" gin. Stick it in a fancy bottle, give it a quirky name, and a weird back story and Bobs your uncle.
