Old wheat varieties

We grew 12 varieties on 1 ha plots for Masstock trials in 2009, and I asked for one more to be included "to see just how much genetic improvement there has been in 25 years" - so we planted Riband.

Come harvest, plot number 13 out yielded every other variety by about half a tonne to the Ha. You know how these companies like to shout about their new wonder varieties every year, "such and such did X tonnes in trials", well they kept pretty quiet about this one...

I should still have the results on file, I'll have a look.

Grew a field of Brock in the mid eighties sown at 12 stone to the acre, instead of the usual 16stone, yield has not been surpassed or come near too as yet.;)

Riband still has a few fans up here, might need a fair few chemicals to keep it clean but those that grow it like it as it's consistent in terms of yield and quality.

First post, so here goes..
Found an old mid-eighties drilling note book with the following varieties:
Moulon, Galahad, Mission, Brimstone, Fenman, Avalon, Brock and Norman. The question being has the job moved forward?
Moulon was a disaster it got dropped like a stone when one year near 80% of the grain sites were blind, I dont think they ever
really found out what went wrong, can anybody remember the reason??

Can't remember growing Moulin,Mission or Brimstone but grew the rest.Avalon always after peas,Fenman late after sugar beet,Norman anywhere.Norman first 4tonne wheat here and still look to see if in parentage of new varieties. Also remember Longbow?

My Dad grew Galahad as a soft milling wheat. Like most varieties it made the headlines after one great year then everyone bought into it & it never repeated that performance.

Father still raves about riband, we grew it up intil 2000 and it gave us our best yields that haven't been bettered yet.
Is riband seed still available I'd love to give a small area ago.

It will make you realise how much fungicides work! Expect at least 4 spring fungicides & maybe even 1 autumn one if you have a simple seed dressing...
