I am sure many are aware of micro brewery's across the country and now there is even micro distillerys taking off round here. Some of these operation seem to make enough to keep a few folk in work on rather small volumes. Even the Edradour distillery at Pitlochry employ 3 men on only 90 000 litres, 120 000 bottles per year approx 100 tons of malt per annum.
I am wondering if there is an opening for a micro Maltings. Does any one know the smallest commercially successful Malting's in UK?

I have been round a large maltings, quite impressive; no blokes in steamy rooms with wooden shovels!
I know the Black Isle Brewery use their own organic barley, but I believe they send it away to the maltsters. Perhaps have a word with somebody like them for starters, they will explain the whys and wherefores, I'm sure.

This is an idea we have thought of too, we have a microbrewery in one of our rental units and it pains me not to be selling them something off the farm! I went to look round Tuckers Maltings in Newton Abbot when I was at Seale Hayne in the 70's and they are still in business I believe. I haven't found any examples of micro malting but would be keen to hear if anyone has had a go, or has any ideas about how a small scale start could work.

Robin appel owns the Warminster distillery which I believe supplies many micro breweries and larger breweries. I expect there are some on here who supply Warminster with maris otter. They would know more details about it than me.

With the number of micro breweries there must be an interest in special malts. Give it a go and I expect a few of us could act as tasters.

TFF Ipa or perhaps a stout
