Thanks @JP1 Maybe you could put the Preamble on here.!! It is very impressive. I know one star of the small screen looking around the herd as we speak.

I have decided to sell my Hemingby Herd of Pedigree Lincoln Reds this year at LouthLivestock Market after 62 years of great enjoyment, and satisfaction at the successes the Herd has had, both in the show ring, and with the many Bulls and Heifers sold to other Herds in this country, and overseas.

Our four children are all happily making their way in other fields in London andabroad, and now is the right time for the Herd to be sold.

This is a genuine dispersal sale, with the only animals retained being the remainder of the 2023 fattening cattle, plus a few drape cows and their calves.

The adult females are being scanned on Monday 7th October with the due datesbeing available on Facebook, the Society website and at the Sale. Any animals not incalf will not be at the sale. All the Pedigree calves have been birth notified and are eligible for Registration.I have tried to link Dams and Daughters and Sisters, plus I have added Showsuccesses, Bulls sold, and prices made where appropriate, plus my opinion of quite afew of the younger cattle with show potential.

History:The Hemingby Herd was founded in 1941 by my father, Frank Read and is the oldest Lincoln Red Herd still actively selling Pedigree animals. This was his second attempt, as his first Herd was largely destroyed in 1938 by an outbreak of Foot and Mouth, leaving him with 3 heifer calves at another yard. These 3 heifers became the Connie, Polly and Treasure families, with• the Bridget family coming from Tetney Faith, bred by Field Strawson atGrimsby;• the Orchid family coming from Baumber Poppy bred by Mr Jordan,Baumber;• the Mattie family from Walcot Mattie 19th bought at the Walcot dispersal sale for the late John Bembridge in 1961 for 210gns, my first ever purchase;and• the Ann family from Market Stainton X6, the winning Young Farmer heifer of 1998, bred by Robert Needham.

I owe so much to the cattle, starting with joining the Lincoln Red Council in 1971,and the Royal Smithfield Council in 1977, and from commentating with the great Mike Tucker at the Smithfield Show, and then the Royal, and the LincolnshireShow’s Grand Parades, also joining the Interbreed show judging circuit. I have been so lucky to have judged at 16 County Shows over the years, culminating in the Lincolnshire Show in 2024, all thanks to my Lincoln Red Cattle. Our Society has always had a reputation of being the friendly one, with defeat being accepted gracefully, and winning shared at the bar!

The Herd has exported cattle to Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Hungary, and the USA, and semen from St Fort Essex to Australia, New Zealand, St Helena, Brazil, and Canada.

Some Statistics:• The Herd has won:- 67 Supremes, 36 Male, and 77 Female Championships, plus 547 firsts at Summer, and Fatstock Shows.• The first Bull sold was:- Hemingby Colin, sold in 1943 for 130gns(equivalent of £5000 today).• Stock Bulls:- 40 Stock Bulls have been used in the Herd since 1941 that have produced Bulls sold for breeding.• Most successful Sire:- Anwick Cardinal produced 31 sons between 1950and 1953 sold for breeding.• Other influential sires over the last 20 years have been Anwick Chancellor,St Fort Essex and Market Stainton Goodman. I have known Mike since my YFC days. He has always been a supporter of the YFC and many young people. The cattle are a credit to him and his stockman Richard Waite. Richard's Dad was Farm foreman and Richard grew up on the farm among the cattle. Anyone interested in getting into Lincoln's has the best chance ever of getting top stock to start a herd.

Good Question @Whitepeak . Arrangements have been put in place, Animals bought that are outside the Zone are to be taken back to Mikes, blood tested and then moved on, if clear.
The Zone is getting bigger by the day!! and animals can be moved within it. Mike can not hold on and have the sale later as he has sold most of his straw and hay. We did not know Blue tongue would be such a problem this Autumn. If anyone is worried it would pay them to talk to Mike or the Auctioneers. There are always ways around any problems.

It is getting closer!! For anyone who is concerned regarding Blue tongue , I suggest you ring the Auctioneers as they have things in place to help you. I know Mike is worried of the knock on effect which is a great shame as he is a grand chap and there are some grand cattle. Look forward to seeing some new faces around the ring on the day.

No, your not, that is second well established herd this year. Native cattle, will suit many systems and are established from Orkney islands to deepest Cornwall. But some of the long established herds naturally come from Lincs. They also are well known for crossing well with many other breeds. I have 1 of Mike's Bulls at the moment and have used his bloodlines before, Particularly 'Hemingby Rhodes' which left me some fabulous cattle several years ago.

Hope to see interested Cattle men at Louth, Lincs on Friday for a very interesting Sale.
I see there is a thread on aggresive cows, well yes you get the odd one at calving but Lincoln's are noted for being docile sometimes stubborn for handling. The last 2 years I have only had to help a couple or 3 at calving out of about 15 each year. Usually you can suckle them with no crush protection. IF you need to physically help a cow it immediately costs money.!!

Well, I hope cattlemen are organised for Louth, Lincs tomorrow. I guess the hard work is today at Hemingby and there will be almost a silent yard tonight. A very sad day for the Waite Family as they have worked for Mike and tended some excellent cattle for many years. Look forward to meeting some new faces interested in Lincoln Red Cattle tomorrow. A very good way of starting a new and very good show potential herd.
