Once Whitehall gets control... livestock to be slaughtered at nearest abattoir..

Not all abattoirs handle pigs or goats. What if your nearest one was a non stunning Halal one, could you refuse to take livestock there on animal welfare grounds ?
The “nearest” term concerns me! That would mean we have no choice who we sell too, buyers will slam us or us the Gov going to go the Corbyn route and nationalise abattoirs and food production :nailbiting:

It's all a play on words and vote seeking. The argument will be made that the nearest abattoir that kills your spec of animal or the firm you sell too, their nearest might be 3hrs from you, if you see what I mean. Nothing will change imo.

I seem to recall that many years ago the SA rules specified something like ''nearest abattoir'' but once organic food gained some mainstream market it was changed to ''nearest suitable abattoir'' ---it's all in the wording

So much for a Brexit bonfire of legislation, a tsunami of new rules is on its way ?

A tsunami ?killing cattle at your nearest slaughterhouse, micro chipping cats and planting a million trees! Your abit dramatic. If it helps small local slaughterhouses to fire up again and the meat to be eaten locally im all for it.

Remoaners out spreading fear and fake news as usual

Our local small abattoir is as busy as ever, got to book stock in a month ahead and most of the meat is eaten locally, either as home kill or through local butchers. It's not his throughput that's squeezing him but the high costs imposed on him by the govt. Obviously I can't see food hygiene rules being relaxed, but some sort of rebate for smaller abattoirs would make a big difference.

Before everyone shouts this down or simply dismisses this out of hand, this "consultation" is absolutely what's needed to identify all that's wrong with our red meat supply chain, in carrying out this consultation they (government) should learn why what they are considering is not possible, not because farmers don't want it but because we have too few names controlling the red meat processing and too much influence by retailers - all because consecutive governments have sat back and allowed this to happen. Maybe, just maybe the consulatation will awaken governments to act and break the strangle hold - if not then they won't get what they are considering. I live in hope but not expectation.

Well it certainly isn’t the bonfire of regulations offered by the fake promises of vote Leave...

If it helps small abattoirs it means more money going to them, that can only mean less money for their suppliers... being forced to sell your product to the nearest buyer is not a policy of a free market conservative government surely? I am not against minimising livestock transport but the devil will be in the detail.

The MPs who vote for cat microchipping can be the ones to come catch our farm cats!
