Opened up my silage field!!!help

I've seen peat cuttings in the islands through old drains in peat. They'd have dug a trench, then used the turfs off the top to form a sort of tent with pitched sides in the bottom of the trench, then back filled. Still working since The Clearances. I was told that after the crofters had drained the land, they were moved on again. No wonder they hate the landowners!
Imagine what they could of done with a digger back then!! We don't know we are living!!

Had quite a productive day and got most of the trench backfilled, filled it to about 8 inches from the top, glad the stone is free!! A lot has gone in!!

If there are low spots that lie wet then fill them to surface, only needs a few feet like this in a wet hole to make a difference. Our contractor has a V bucket an when they come across peaty wet stuff and the sides cave in on them they just lay a 6m length at a time, if its really bad even a 3m bit.

That looks a tidy job you have done, much water coming out the end of the pipe?

Thanks Andrew, the more i think about it the more i think i should take the stone to the top of the trench, it will take a lot longer but better to do it right now, alot of work and effort to not get it spot on!!

A lot of water has been running down the trench and through the stones but not made it to the pipe yet, prob would have got away with just stones!

If i do this again i will get help and do the whole thing at once, when i am digging the trench they could be putting pipe in and filling with stone, then i could come back down behind them sorting the soil out. If you had a good team you could cover a fair bit each day!

Exactly. Can't believe you can take stone off the shore. But as you can (or at least you can get away with it) I would use plenty stone. All the way to the top. Pipe will be redundant.
Smaller stone if possible on top couple of inches just to blind it off nicely.

Falls in to a peat bog that I have spent hours ditching so the field drain can drain away, the soil is almost peat too,

That's great I will fire the stone in tomorrow, What depth should I fill with stone? Was thinking two thirds? Cheers
If the field is wet and the stone is free I'd fill with stone to the top. We've done similar in the past, layer of bought stone just to cover the pipe then fill to top with shale from the farm quarry. Seems to work well because it can take the weight of big machinery so the pipe doesn't get disturbed.
