Brazing rods work for some, for others, me included, a pair of metal coathangers straightened out but with a 90 degree handle bent in one end work very well.

I used a couple of bits of heavy plain wire last night, if it proves to work for me then I might refine it a bit. going by the reactions I got last night and what I've found with the shovel today it's looking hopeful.

I just measured a length from elbow to finger tip then put a little 90 degree bend in them. I believe the original dowsing forks were Y shaped hazel twigs.

I will take a few more efforts before I reckon I can do it but I think that if you have the ability then like everything else it needs practice and experience to get the best out of yourself. I thought it was interesting when I got a reaction roughly where I thought I might, when I got a strong reaction where I didn't think there was anything I thought it was just me making it move until I started digging the next day. Needs more evidence though.

Old dowsers could use the twigs by holding the Y-shaped bit then the other end would point down to water source. Documentary once showed a man telling us where, how deep the drill would find it and how many gallons an hour. He was spot on with depth.

had a 360 in doing some drainage started 2 meters downhill from pipe that hole filled up brim full very quickly, moved 5 metres further down same again it filled up very quickly another 5 metres same again. eventually after 5 holes we narrowed it down and found the problem 25 metres from where it was bubbling up. Christ there was some water but very satisfying when it goes.
