Orf blocks

Yes, Denis Brinicombe buckets are all I've used for lambs for 20 odd years. Quite simply, they work.(y)

I generally use the DXO (or 3-in1, or whatever they call them now) to nip cocci in the bud too. I have a couple of their orf only (Frobut) that are several years old, that I sometimes use first.

Got a question for users of the DB buckets. What are the field conditions like, are there many thistles, gorse, brambles etc?

Same question here. Have been vaccinating lambs for a long time but would like to stop, main problem is due to mastitis caused by orf on ewes teats.but we have a lot of gorse and creeping thistle. Are there people having success with buckets who have a lot of jaggy stuff?? @neilo ?

We've got no gorse here but do still have thistles even if they're a lot better than they were, the db buckets do seem to keep orf at bay

Same here. Very little in the way of thistles it gorse now, but used to get plenty of orf in clean ground before, and still get the beginnings of it now. The buckets just stop it getting to the point where it causes problems, whilst allowing them enough of a challenge to get a natural immunity.

you need a prescription to buy the cocci buckets not sure about the orf buckets, in terms of cost I'm not sure what it would work out at per lamb but its cheaper than them getting orf losing performance and treating them as well

What is the cost of using buckets per lamb and do you have to keep the ewes away from the buckets?

For the cocci (or cocci/orf ones) it depends how big a cocci challenge they get. Lambs will only take them when they have a bit of cocci, and stop once it's cleared up. That small challenge is needed to let them develop a natural immunity. Ewes hardly touch them at all, unless they are starved of everything else or shut in a shed & bored, IME. I've been using them for a long time, and I'm convinced that the amount of cocci challenge the lambs get on pasture now is much lower, probably because we never have lambs that get to the stage of chucking out millions of oocysts for the next one. The buckets aren't cheap, but we find we need fewer and fewer each year. What they don't take, gets a lid back on and back in the shed for next year.:)

I just checked back through my invoices. I bought 10 cocci buckets and 12 cocci/orf ones in March last year. I used about half of those last year, for 850 outdoor lambs and about 150 lambs in December. Those December ones will have a dose of Vecoxan at 4 weeks (with their first Ovivac) as they have a much greater challenge indoors, then access to a bucket in the creep afterwards. Nothing else gets Vecoxan.

As for the orf only ones, I only have a couple of those, which I might put out for the (150?) early indoor lambs, & in the cade pen, before there is sufficient cocci challenge to warrant the cocci/orf buckets. I finished those two orf buckets this year, after their 3rd or 4th season. Of course, some farms don't get cocci to worry about, so won't need the deccox buckets anyway.

Do you need a prescription from the vet to buy them from Charlie s or DB direct?

As posted above, a scrip is needed for the cocci ones, as they contain Deccox (which would need a scrip in feed too). The orf ones don't need a scrip. Scrip costs me about a tenner.

Followed an earlier thread and have started using Brinicombe tubbys, DXO is the code I gave. A bit early to say how effective they are but, regarding costs, I think that when you do the calculations you have to look at the price of scabivax, pen & strep etc. and your time... plus maybe factor-in the de-stressing effect on you of not having horrific looking sheep around. If the tubbys work for us as well as they have for others it will be an on-going thing here.

These tubs my biggest problem is iv 150 ewes running with 90 heifers will the cattle just gobble them before the ewes and lambs get near them?

No idea. A neighbour had one land in his field a few years ago, which was useful for his flock of 10 sheep. I would never sell him one as he'd need a scrip, so the high wind was fortuitous:whistle:. We weren't sure whether his horses would eat it, and if it would do any harm to them, so we tied a rail across the corner of a fence to make a barrier, then put the bucket under a tree behind the rail. Lambs could run under to get to it, but horses couldn't reach it.:)

we have one 3-1 bucket with about 60 lambs since march there is about inch and half gone out the top , its kept inside one of those shelter creep feeders ,
the other batches similar numbers have a cocci bucket in a gateway (with gate open and a creep gate to fence line , bucket inside ) similar amount gone ,
our ewes will eat them otherwise , will repalce lids in a few weeks time and store
I would think three or four buckets will last us for 2 years use ,

How long do you leave orf buckets with lambs for? Bought some this season on the advice of @neilo and haven't had orf around the mouths of lambs. Thank you @neilo for the advice ,it's been fantastic .(y). Down to my last 2 buckets now and was wondering how much longer to offer them .
