Community farm seeks farmer(s)

To run cow-with-calf dairy


Requirement: Dairy farmer / share milker / dairy farm family / new entrant(s) or similar person(s) required to autonomously run a new calf at foot dairy herd on an organic community farm. Tailor made support available to suit successful applicant’s requirements.

Facilities: 150 acres of holistic agroforestry grazing paddocks. New cow tracks and electric fencing have been set up. New milking parlour, and milk room with bulk tank / pasteuriser. Winter cow housing, manure compost area, silage clamp, slurry collection pit and all basic farm machinery including a tractor / loader has been organised. Silage has been harvested into the silage clamp this year and the barn is stocked with 100 hay and 100 straw round bales. A person is available to help grow milk sales.

Cows: A herd of organic cows which are suitable for once per day milking has been arranged. They are currently dry cows and due to give birth in a few months’ time.

Accommodation: There is a 2-bedroom farm cottage with modern facilities available at the farm if required.

Current Aims: To successfully operate a high quality, closed loop / regenerative / permaculture style of calf at foot dairy farm which is both environmentally sustainable and financially successful. Biodynamic certification, grass fed certification and a plastic free farm would be a potential 6-year end goal.

Methods: Organic, minimal tillage, holistic management, antibiotic free and grass fed. Retired older cows to be sponsored to live out their days in a retirement field when possible. Full health and safety / machinery licences / farm waste recycling rules must be complied with.
