Slightly off topic but of the newer conventional varieties, what would people recommend for this year and farm saving for a few years after that??
Its interesting if the UK is getting new conventional varieties coming through. We have had nothing new available independently tested in France since 2014. The last is called ES Mambo and I believe the most widely grown variety in France.Slightly off topic but of the newer conventional varieties, what would people recommend for this year and farm saving for a few years after that??
I’ve gone with Acacia for half my OSR area this year, the other half being hybrid but like you, I’m hoping to FSS next yearSlightly off topic but of the newer conventional varieties, what would people recommend for this year and farm saving for a few years after that??
Count out 250 seeds, weigh them x4 = TGW you say good germ from your test so work on 95%, target population 45 plants, allow 10% field loss. With a TGW of 8g (bold sample you say) works out to 4.2kg/ha. Why are we disregarding years of trials that say 25-35 plants coming out of winter produces optimum yield? I appreciate we've lost seed dressing insecticides. Just thinking of a number doubling it for good measure and adding some more because it's cheap off the pile is senceless. Good seedbed, moisture, and planting this early = 40-50 seeds per m2. Only my opinion though.
Not sure I would want to drill anything with a reading above zero in erucic acid for seed, and if you keep getting readable levels consider growing clearfield varieties with corresponding spray to kill off the volunteer issue.2%
Edited to add: I think the tolerance at the crush is 4% but I wouldn't want to be breeding up anything over 1% @crazy_bull ?

I don't know if this is because the breeders are not entering anything for trials or because the gov agencies responsible are pushing hybrids for our own good.
Newer conventional varieties are imported from other EU countries but without testing they are a shot in the dark for us.
