Does anyone know of a good make of outdoor thermometers ? I keep reading reviews on Amazon where people complain how unreliable they can be, I only wanted the simple min-max mercury type thinking there should be nothing to go wrong !!

We use this type. They cost about a fiver each, so very inexpensive and easy to nail on a post or wall. We used to religiously record all temperatures about the place and the min. / max. facility was very useful. My advice is to put at least four thermometers up about the place and if they are all showing roughly the same sort of reading then all good ..... but if you have one constantly giving a much different reading then it's probably duff. This type of cheap instrument is far more accurate than those all-singing-all-dancing digital weather stations - been there and done that  - and we've always returned back to these. They are surprisingly robust.

Hi all,

Much depends on the accuracy you need. You can spend £100 on individual maximum and minimum thermometers. There are the digital thermometers too.

The Sixes max/min are very good (as per the ebay link above), I've actually just ordered one to test alongside my £100 min thermometer and digital thermometers so should be interesting to see the results.
