Radio 4 Today , main 0810 political interview just aired.

NZ model for all subsidy withdrawal. Limited environmental scheme only.

Embrace all new technology; reverse Glyphosate ban and allow GM.

Accept World Trade deals with major beef producers access for mince etc (and ducking the production standards question) in exchange for trade openings for prime cuts in to China etc.

The failed UKIP now conservative Eustace wasn't hiding his hard Brexit credentials on Any Questions either

Feel rough this morning for some reason, like I've been beaten up so this comment is fired off the hip.

He's seen it like it is, a realist if you may, perhaps we need a man like that.

Maybe

Trouble is none of them know how it will be in the future. Just "better" than being in the EU. None of them can even agree what they will yield on in negotiations.

An interesting parallel in the past over tuition fees. The Lib Dems took the wrap yet it was a Conservative policy they had to yield on when in coalition. I remember Two Brains Willetts telling us the £9k would be a cap and only charged for exceptional campuses . Remind me what the default universal figure is now?

The most enlightening comment was the host farmer looking at his beef cattle with Sarah and saying anyone believing post Brexit there would be any less regulation is basically living in cuckoo land .

Paterson has ignored what happened to the NZ agricultural support industries after their subsidy slash. While it's true that only a small percentage of farmers went bust, (from memory) around 80 per cent of those supplying agriculture failed. Global companies loaded veterinary drug prices onto countries which could afford it, keeping dose prices at pence per ml for NZ. Different subsidy?

Did he mention that NZ's successful TB eradication programme was conceived to boost exports? While the EU have just announced a new Animal Health Act which has the powers to chop ours.

I keep telling you, this is the way its going to be, eventually. And its not just Free Trade Tories that will be gunning for farm subsidies, it'll be Anti Wealthy Farmer Leftists too. From whichever side of the political divide is in power in the UK post Brexit there will be a massive desire to cut farm subsidies and open up UK markets to the cheapest imports the world has to offer.

Because its a win/win for politicians - cut spending on something unpopular (or at least not popular enough for anyone to complain about it being cut), and give the money to something else more electorally appealing (schools'n'hospitals etc). And at the same time allow in imports to ensure prices don't rise too much, maybe even fall.

The only subsidies left will be the Green ones, and the hoops to jump through to get them will be many and complicated.

Its whats going to happen, prepare for it.

I agree with @Goweresque

I was looking at a Mid Tier environmental flier that came yesterday, inviting entries for 2017. Then I read the 2016 thread on this grant, where agreements had not been finalised, cash not paid, capital works delayed etc. etc.

Then I went on the EA website for a look see. And I see that for constructing a 'BADGER GATE' in a new fence line, to an agreed plan, I can milk over £120 per year.
Can I put peanuts and a trap the other side of it?

I can't like it, but I've got to agree with it!:(

And which country are you going to rely on for cheap imports, year in year out? Syria? Zim?
Most of these countries seem as though they can hardly reliably feed themselves still less provide a surplus at less than we can produce it for.
And who will sell this cheap stuff cheap and take the provenance risk ? Tesco, been there done that , the other high end sellers?
I doubt it think of the implications for careers and share values when J Vine esq runs a 30 minute special at lunchtime detailing the substitution of prime snake for prime beef.
The present crop of politicians are not ruled by conviction in the way we used to see , I simply do not believe there is a radical bone in any of them .
Anyone can talk about what they would like to do, doing it is a different matter.
