does anyone use a pacifier for kicking heifers? Any good? Clips, kick bars etc r nae use!
We've always used clips-not used a kick bar for years. Worked a treat (y) until this fly season (n) Got a couple of feisty new heifers that can really boot and a dozen or so others that are getting into bad habits. Clip making naff all difference :( Sorry I'm no help......I'm just feeling your pain ;)
@bigw Do you blow down once? Will that last them till they milk out? Generally just use the blow pipe for let down issues

Have memories as a kid when dad bought an artic load of heifers to calve down. I was sent up to sit on the heifers back and hold its tail up for the milking. There were one or two real nasty girls, but they all settled down eventually. Flossie, your brood may still be a bit young for this yet :)

Its not so easy in some parlors but with our suckler cows in the crush we put a rope or strap over there back and pull them down if we are trying to get a calf to suck and they won't stop kicking

Yes I've seen this done, but not by a child, by the farmer! I don't think there was much misbehaving going on! :D

Yep, works in parlour too, well it did in our herringbone. Chuck the rope loop over the cows back and pull it under with a hooked stick and pull it through itself and tight. Not so tight you have a rodeo but just enough.

I use a piece of pulse tube and normally blow a few times till air starts comin out, they will usually stand then to get milked. We had a really bad batch of heifers this spring and it was the only way I could milk some.

Please can you explain, Do what?
pleased it isn't just me that is a bit bemused by this :wtf::stop::censored:

But then I'm sure they probably do it in Hollywood for health reasons :)
As explained by @bigw above, you feed a length of pipe into the cows vagina (I find about a foot in) and gently blow a few times. We've only ever used it to get cows/heifers to let down but it generally works.
I think it's a New Zealand trick.....might have been via @multipower ?
We've a coloured tape on one end of the pipe, so you know which is the safe end next time you come to it :wideyed:
