Painting over sealant

Iv got some joints to fill on metal. can I paint over normal silicone sealant or do I need something special

NO, it will bead up like water on oil. That's for silicone, "siliconIZED acrylic sealant" is just latex and can be painted over with latex paint. You'd have to put a different sealer over the silicone to span all of it, or possibly there is a specialized primer that will stick, I'm not aware of one.

I would use u-pol tiger seal. Brilliant stuff and can easily be painted.

You can paint over polyurethane sealer and ms polymer sealer no bother. Ms polymer is available from tool station. Tigerseal is polyurethane.

A poke around lamma show reveals it’s standard practice on some of the cheaper stuff

I’d rather weld it up, even if you do it vertically down or just at a fast speed so there’s little penetration to cause warping but seals it up nicely to keep rust out

Tiger seal as mentioned above, used on a lot of car restorations, primed and painted afterwards, works very well indeed.
