Paraquat was so deadly that by the time you realised you had a mouthful of it you were too late. That was why being kept in old unlabelled bottles in garden sheds was such a risk.

Wasn’t the antidote to eat soil.

PDQ was a combination of paraquat and diquat from memory?

To be honest, I used to use diquat a bit, especially on spuds. Worked a treat.

I think they had difenzoquat in the USA which was sort of semi-selective and you could use it on wheat, no idea how it worked.

They use a fair bit of paraquat in the states for burning stumbles now they've got roundup resistance.

News report at the time said poisoning but yes ,you are correct ,,just googled it .

Apart from being poisons, both were very good products. Roundup will eventually get resistance around the world then the job will be really knackered.

My cousin is a PhD studying Parkinson’s at Cambridge Uni, and my dad is a sufferer. My cousin is pretty ademant that it’s almost impossible to pin the condition on any one factor like OP’s or a particular weed killer, despite people’s desire to find a specific “thing” to blame. It’s not that simple unfortunately.

But if anyone wants to donate their brain to my cousin, she’s always on the look out for more to slice up!

I'm not quite done with mine yet, but am quite willing to give my knackered corpse to medical science when the day comes.

Anything with clay in, but you had to be quick!

Gramoxone was a useful chemical on fenland potatoes wait until about 10 per cent up then blitz them. Best for burning off potatoes was DNBP get that on your skin and you went yellow.Safer than sulphuric acid we went to after it was banned.

DNBP was found in the artic circle or something horrible stuff, sulphuric was the safest chemical, if you survived using it, It wouldnt give you cancer or something 20 years later

You can donate your body to the nearest medical school but it needs to be fresh- they don't accept bodies more than 1 week old. If you want your body cremated and returned to your family after a 3 year 'holiday' you can do this and get a free cremation into the bargain.

Paraquat, Diquat and a mixture of the two, called Sprayseed, is still used a lot in Australia. Great products if used correctly, but no getting away from the fact they are both very, very toxic! Need a license to buy them over there.

Parkinsons is such a complex condition and so poorly understood that it's impossible to know what causes it at the moment - even the apparent genetic susceptibility/hereditary possibilities are poorly understood. My dad has it & two of his siblings died from it, could it have been exposure to paraquat, genetics or purely chance? One thing I can say is that having seen what it does to plants - even in minute doses - there's no chance I'd give it a chance to touch my skin!

This is why we need old chemistry back now , to reduce resistance and keep cost of production down
