Pea Contract

I have never been given a named variety just a marrowfat type.

I must admit I would be equally jarred off if a merchant did this to me - it is highly a-moral in my opinion to treat a customer in this fashion. They must have known for some time how much seed they had to supply a given contract - unless they were promised a tonnage from elsewhere of course, and they themselves have been let down, or one of their seed stocks has failed germination - but I see no reason why they would not mention that in the communication if this were the cause of the non-supply. Announcing such a situation so late in the season and without explanation suggests they just want to 'crow-bar' growers into contracts that are less easy to 'sell'. As Honest John says yield on blue peas compensates for marrowfat reduced yields so there ought to be little in it ultimately and in fact the quality standards on blue peas will be easier to achieve - fact! Actually peas are one area where seed production is easier to reach sale at full premium because there are no staining clauses and no moisture / admix calculation. Thanks for all the replies, there have been some discussions and I have various options. My dilemma is that I don't know whether to stick with the original merchant or move my business elsewhere.

What is the standard waste & Stain % & Bleached % on this Martow Fat contracts please.

I think it’s 20% combined. We’ve been growing blues for 3 years now, kingfisher seems to work well for us.

Standard contract terms for large blues are:

Moisture 13-15%
max 2% Admix
max 10% bleached
max 10% waste/stain
max 5% cracked seed coats
max 2% insect damage

other points are heat damage, marsh spot etc.
