perkins 6354 engine problem

Hi
I seem to have the same problem on two Perkins engines one in a JCB 820 360 & the other Class Dominator.
Its to do with the stop leaver. After stopping I cannot get the engine to restart. The stop leaver goes back to the working potion but does not let the fuel through.
I have to keep fiddling with stop leaver on the pump to get them to work.
Just wondering if I will have to have the pumps reconditioned?

Have you checked that the D shaped hole in the lever is still D shaped and not round. ie the lever may be moving but not the spindle underneath. If not that then it might be worth running a drop of ATF in the fuel.Sounds like a sticking delivery valve. If the ATF doesn't cure it then it's off with the pumps....

And both pumps have exactly the same problem?
You sure you're going back to the run position on the lever?
As said something sticking, so a tap on the side of the pump with a big spanner might help, double check to see, if the shaft going into the pump is actually in the run position.

You haven't been filling them from a drum have you ,doesent take much of some residue of some kind been left in drum to fukc them up, propcorn was a prime example some years back as the 20/25 ltr drums it came in were strong ideal drums for refuelling.

Thanks for your replies
I have not been filling from any secondhand drums.
The external part of the leaver is returning fully. That's the first thing I thought off
I have got a better engine to go in the digger as its on its last legs.
Bit more worried about the combine engine.
Will try some ATF oil I take it you mean automatic transmission fluid?
giving it a tap seams good
Thanks

two stroke oil but your real problem is water in the pump, not enough to do harm but enough to stick the stopper. hit the housing that the stopper spindal goes into when the stopper is in start position, it should fire up then, nothing to hard just a few light taps.

our forklift has this fault after laying up, as does our 135 but a bit of 2 stroke seems to shift the water and lub the pump but might take time, this was told to us by a diesel specialist
