Phone line not yours anymore!

this was new to me.

Parents have had same phone number for 40 years.

Joined talktalk about 4 years ago.

If you want to join another company now ie BT, plusnet etc. you can't keep that original number!

Really shocked about that apparently it depends on network providers so you can keep your number with some firms but not others.

I made the same change a couple of years ago and lost my number.
Not that bothered as I rarely answer the phone anyway, it is never someone I particularly want to talk to.

BT tried it on with my Mother, she went from BT broadband to sky, when she rang them to terminate her BT they told her she would have to terminate the lot, phone line included, then re pay for the connection, and lose her number, she rang Sky and they said it was commonplace, but outside the realms of her BT contract, they dealt with it, and she kept her number. It seems the call handlers(BT) chase and introduction bonus

Tried to move from talktalk to plusnet and they wouldn't be able to take my old phoneline on. Sky would have.

If you are being kept on the same exchange then it should be possible to retain your number - Citizens Advice have a page about it here, although that is slightly at odds with what Ofcom say.
