Pickup Canopy - VAT treatment

Im just shopping around for a new pickup at the moment and spent this afternoon visiting Ford/VW/Toyota/Nissan/Izuzu.

One of the dealers said it would be hard to claim the vehicle is commercial if I put a canopy on the back of it. Im not talking an Ifor Willaims type rather a Truckman type.

None of the other dealers mentioned it and not heard that before.

I will be checking with my accountant when he is back in the office in the new year.

Exactly, you see enough builders pickup around with canopies for instance. I will probably be adding a bit of sign writing to the rear window as well, so 100% commercial.

The salesman in question was from VW but they have ruled themselves out as it only tows 3.1t and would be lucky to see it in the UK this side of June.

From memory, in order to be classed as a light commercial vehicle your twin cab pickup has to have a payload capacity of at least 1000kg, and the canopy is on top of that tonne so you have to check the cargo capacity of the truck and the mass of the canopy in order to legitimately reclaim the vat.

this isn't at question surely? it doesn't have to be a 'light commercial vehicle' to be a business expense?

rubbish. Sorry, the vehicle is either classified as commercial and thus VAT reclaimable or it isn't. What if you bought it and put a canopy on subsequently?

What if you bought one with a canopy on it, and then subsequently removed it?

Also, why in the world are you not looking at the new Navara?

I am and think it's between that and the ranger until I have them on test drive.

Just buy them separately then, 2 invoices, both paid for by the business, both business assets and then claim the VAT as normal.

Surely any salesman/dealer worth their salt & wanting a sale would bury the cost of the canopy within the invoice total.

No mention of it then no need for 2 separate invoices & no need for HMRC to be querying whether or not you can still fit 1000kg in it.

I think you're right there, a friend had a vat inspection and was told that this is the case, although I can't understand it as you can claim back vat on a fiesta van :scratchhead:
