Pickup Canopy - VAT treatment

I stand to be corrected but if canopy takes it below 1000kg payload then it is treated as a car rather than a van and more onerous tax regime applies. It can still be classed as commercial and claim VAT back but only if 100% commercial use. If some personal use then vat is payable and company car tax at whatever % of list price. If classed as a van (>1000kg payload) then personal use is allowed, BIK only payable on £3000

I believe the above is correct , however as other have said above there are legitimate ways around this on invoicing.

Just buy them separately then, 2 invoices, both paid for by the business, both business assets and then claim the VAT as normal.

Best way forward

Don't forget you could temporarily remove the canopy, put it on the lawn & use it as a chook shelter & then it's not a permanent addition - just a transient one :)

Try the argument next time you arrive at the toll booths on the Severn Bridge. You'll be classed as a Goods Vehicle with or without a canopy.

Another good reason to avoid the bridge then............(running away to hide from all he Welsh...;-)))
