Pickup recommendations

We're looking to replace our knackered Nissan Navara. We need a crew cab to accomodate children, and need the load space at the back for all the junk required in the course of farming away from home. We also want something that's capable of towing a trailer loaded with sheep so decent towing weight. (Other half said he saw a pickup advertised that had no towbar. Don't understand??!!)

Ideally 2nd hand but decent so under £10,000. What you you prefer and why? We're not too keen on the newer Navara (ours is 2004 D22), all big and chrome but not as much pulling power. TIA!

If you can find one without a towbar get it bought!!

It will most likely have had an easy life.

No hassle to get a tow bar fitted.

From reading hear in the last year , this is my summary , the navara will split in half , the rangers are good but you need to have a spare engine handy , the dmax are great but can leak diesel into the engine oil and feck up the engine , and then the Hilux just go on for ever.

The mighty highlux is not immune, the MK5 has issues with engine and gearbox

Unfortunately nothing is perfect :( our Navara is actually relatively sound in the chassis, it's everything else that's starting to fail.

Husband's boss has a 2014 Navara, we've both driven it and don't like it as much as our D22. Maybe it's just that one but it doesn't seem as powerful...

I don't think the euro whatever it is emission version of the later D40s do them any favours, still a nice truck when you get used to it but I miss that 'pull a house down in top gear' torque, have even considered getting her remapped

If your buying new there is lots of choice. Prices across the board are similar for like for like spec so buy what you like best.

As for used ones they all have plus and minus points depending on what you want them to do. Have a rummage on here you will find everything you want to know (and a few things you don't) about your chosen make and model of pickup.

I chose the Ford with the 3.2 engine and auto box. It's great but is somewhat addicted to stopping at fuel stations:unsure:

Pre-adblue Rangers, whether 2.2 or 3.2, do like a drink. The latest ones with adblue are reputed to be more parsimonious.
Ford have a new range of engines being rolled out that replaces the two different existing 2.2 engines with one, more refined and reliable, 2.0 engine. It is already fitted to Transit and I think to some of the cars, though not the Edge or Ranger yet.
They claim 20% better efficiency. I doubt whether that equates to 20% better fuel economy, although it wouldn't surprise me compared to pre-adblue 2.2 engines. No idea what they intend to replace the 3.2 engine as I've not heard of any replacement for that. These engines are built in many different countries using common parts and local parts, to the same design. The Transit 2.2 is basically the same as the Ranger 2.2, except that European Transit has a British built version and the Ranger has a South African built one. While UK engine production has already migrated to building the new 2.0, the timing of any change in South African production may well be a year or two behind.

I've had zero significant problems with the Ranger so far and only two insignificant ones that I fixed myself. One using a cable tie and the other with Loktite.

We've seen a Ford Ranger at a reasonable price and low milage so we're planning to have a look and test drive at least, there are a few out there that we like the look of, I guess most of the time it comes down to what's available at the time and personal preference, but I do appreciate the feedback.
